Religious moralism and family ties, alcoholism and suicide are just a few background elements that intermesh in Káťa Kabanová by Leoš Janáček giving life to a powerful and extraordinary story. Willy Decker sets the story in an unspecified past that is not too distant, in a claustrophobic world of black and pinstripe wool. The scenery and costumes – clear and largely monochromatic - by Wolfgang Gussmann denote the oppression of characters imprisoned in a grey, lonely, wooden room and poorly furnished. Sometimes the room is open to reveal the sky that is, however, always beyond, out of range. The theme of the flight and the escape is essential for the opera and it is conveyed even more clearly in the production of Decker with a specific symbol. Káťa is obsessed with birds and she spends most of the time of the performance trying, uselessly, to hang the picture of a flying bird on the wall. It is a symbol of the freedom she desires but will never have.
