The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an iconic ancient amphitheater located in the heart of Rome, Italy. It was commissioned in AD 72 by Emperor Vespasian and completed in AD 80 by his successor, Titus. The largest amphitheater ever built, it could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators and was used for a variety of public spectacles such as gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, and mock sea battles. Despite suffering damage from earthquakes and stone robbers over the centuries, it remains a prestigious symbol of the grandeur of the Roman Empire and is a major tourist attraction today. The Colosseum is also a World Heritage site and continues to capture the imagination of visitors worldwide with its fascinating history and architectural magnificence.
