== Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean == The '''Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean''' (NSO) is a distinguished cultural institution and the only year-round, professional symphony orchestra on the Oregon coast. Founded in 1989 as the Yaquina Chamber Orchestra and later known as the Yaquina Orchestra, it adopted the name Newport Symphony Orchestra in 2004. The NSO is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Oregon's coastal communities through diverse, inspiring performances and engaging educational activities. === Mission and Values === The mission of the NSO is to enrich the lives of residents and visitors in Oregon’s coastal communities by providing a wide array of musical performances that inspire and educate. The organization holds a firm belief in the power of music to create joy and lasting memories, contributing to the social, cultural, and economic vitality of the community it serves. === History === The NSO's journey began when it was established as the Yaquina Chamber Orchestra in 1989. Over the years, it has evolved into a professional ensemble, taking on its current name in 2004 to reflect its deep connection with the city of Newport. The orchestra's growth and development have been marked by a commitment to excellence in performance and community engagement. === Leadership === Under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Adam Flatt, the NSO has flourished, presenting a variety of classical and contemporary works. The late David Ogden Stiers, known for his role as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the television series M*A*S*H, was a significant figure in the orchestra's history, serving as the Resident Conductor from the orchestra's early days until his passing in 2018. === Performances and Venue === The orchestra's home is the Alice Silverman Theater at the Newport Performing Arts Center, located in the scenic Nye Beach area, close to the beautiful Oregon shoreline. The NSO's regular season runs from September to May, featuring a series of concerts that have become a staple in the cultural calendar of Newport. In addition to its regular season, the NSO presents special events during the summer, including a highly anticipated free community concert on July 4th. === Education and Outreach === Education is a cornerstone of the NSO's mission, with programs like the Youth Orchestra Program and Family Strings designed to foster musical education and appreciation among young people.
