The perfect end to Francesco Lecce-Chong’s tenure as Music Director & Conductor of your Eugene Symphony, the evening begins with three a capella pieces by American trailblazer Amy Beach, featuring the Eugene Symphony Chorus. These three chorales sound a plea for forgiveness and then Gustav Mahler’s deeply spiritual and uplifting “Resurrection” Symphony will guide you on a journey from darkness to light.

Eugene native Carey Bell joins the orchestra for Copland's Clarinet Concerto alongside Jessie Montgomery's Soul Force and Ravel's romantic Daphnis et Chloe.

Our season of storytelling comes to a close with Maurice Ravel’s balletic masterpiece Daphnis et Chloe. It combines a dramatic narrative sweep with jaw-dropping Impressionist details, and will bring you to the edge of your Silva Concert Hall seat. Eugene native Carey Bell, now Principal Clarinet of the famed San Francisco Symphony, returns home to play Aaron Copland’s lyrical and lively Concerto, originally written for jazz legend Benny Goodman. American powerhouse Jessie Montgomery’s opening work draws on big-band jazz, R&B, and funk to weave a sonic tapestry. Your spirit will soar!

Celebrate the holiday season with Ludwig van Beethoven's hymn to humanity, featuring the Eugene Symphony Chorus and a work by First Symphony Composer Gabriella Smith.

There is no experience that compares to hearing a live performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s hymn to humanity, starting with the sounds of order emerging from chaos on through to the spine-tingling “Ode to Joy” that will bring you out of your seat in exultation at the end. We also hear First Symphony Project composer Gabriella Smith’s collage of sounds inspired by the natural world, an a capella work sung by the Eugene Symphony Chorus, and another stunning but rarely heard work for chorus and orchestra by Beethoven, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage.

Caroline Shaw’s Music in Common Time adds contemporary rhythmic energy before Copland’s Lincoln Portrait features guest narrator Dan Carlin, host of the acclaimed Hardcore History podcast. The program culminates in Hanson’s Song of Democracy, with the Eugene Symphony Chorus, a sweeping affirmation of resilience and the enduring power of American voices.
