The Claremont Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is a distinguished community orchestra based in Claremont, California. It was founded in 1953 by George Denes, with initial sponsorship from the Kiwanis Club of Claremont and the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Claremont. The orchestra was established as a part of the music program for Claremont schools through the Claremont Adult School. Over the years, the CSO has evolved into a non-profit organization, currently under the leadership of Dr. Robert Sage. The orchestra's mission is to provide the local community with free access to music, performed by a dedicated group of approximately 70 volunteer musicians. These talented individuals come from various locations across Southern California and commit their time and skills to deliver musically enriching experiences. The CSO is recognized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is affiliated with the Chambers of Commerce in several cities, including Claremont, Glendora, La Verne, Pomona, San Dimas, and Upland. The orchestra's Board of Directors for the 2022-2023 season includes Dr. Cecilia Cloughly as President, Laura Jaoui as Vice President, Gail Dearing as Secretary, Doug MacLaughlin as Treasurer, and Barbara Bonzo as Past President. Additionally, Monika Curlin, Sue Hodson, and June Xu serve as Members-at-Large, with Gloria Cangahuala holding the dual roles of Executive Director and Concertmaster. The CSO is grateful for the support and assistance provided by the City of Claremont. It also extends its gratitude to Pomona College for allowing the use of Bridges Hall of Music for concerts and Bryant Rehearsal Hall for rehearsals. Temple Beth Israel in Pomona, CA, is also acknowledged for providing rehearsal space. The program notes for CSO performances are written by Gail Powell Dearing, and Beth Shemely at McGregor Shott is recognized for the production of concert flyers and programs. The Claremont Symphony Orchestra remains dedicated to its founding principle of bringing music to the community free of charge, and it continues to be an integral part of the cultural fabric of the region it serves.
