Penguin Cafe Orchestra (PCO)

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra (PCO) was an avant-pop band founded by the late British composer Simon Jeffes. The group is known for its eclectic blend of minimalist and folk music with world music influences. Formed in the early 1970s, the PCO was characterized by its use of a wide variety of instruments including strings, guitars, and percussion, often producing instrumental compositions that defy strict genre classification. The self-titled debut album 'Music from the Penguin Cafe' was released in 1976, marking the beginning of the ensemble's journey through various musical landscapes. Simon Jeffes, alongside co-founder Helen Liebmann, led the ensemble until his death in 1997. Even after its disbandment, the music of Penguin Cafe Orchestra continues to be celebrated for its quirky creativity and has influenced a wide range of contemporary musicians. In recent years, Arthur Jeffes, Simon's son, has revived the spirit of the PCO with his own project, Penguin Cafe.
