Edison

Frederiksberg, Denmark

The Edison building is over 100 years old and has served as the Betty Nansen Theatre's annex stage since 1992. C:NTACT and Betty Nansen Theatre currently operate the lease through a joint lease agreement with Frederiksberg Municipality. The Edison Building was built in 1898-99 as an electricity plant. The building is located on the corner of Edisonvej and Hortensiavej, hence the name, Hortensiaværket . Hortensiaværket was the first power plant in Frederiksberg and supplied electricity to the trams and street lighting in the district, among other things. The building was designed by the Copenhagen city architect Hans Wright and has been rebuilt several times since its construction. From 1929, the building was used exclusively as a converter station and in 1992, when the Betty Nansen Theatre took over the lease, the building was used for storage for the Frederiksberg Road Administration. At that time, there was an entrance from the gates in the courtyard and the audience had to use the toilets in a small house in the courtyard. Since then, the theatre has ensured that the old power plant has been transformed into a theatre.
