Chamber Music Sedona

Sedona, AZ, United States

Chamber Music Sedona (CMS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing classical music to the Sedona, Verde Valley, and Northern Arizona regions. Founded in 1983, CMS originally hosted two-week festivals at Verde Valley School and expanded its reach to include concerts in Prescott, Flagstaff, Jerome, and Cottonwood. In the mid-1990s, CMS appointed its first artistic director, marking the beginning of a year-round concert series. The concerts were initially held at St. John Vianney Church in Sedona, and the organization began to attract renowned artists such as Emanuel Ax, Hillary Hann, the Juilliard String Quartet, and The Tokyo String Quartet, alongside emerging talents. CMS has been actively involved in music education, introducing artists to local schools for Master Classes and music appreciation events. In 2008, CMS expanded its offerings to include Metropolitan Opera HD Live concerts, although this initiative was later discontinued in 2014 due to financial considerations. This led to a reorganization, with a new Board and a consultant brought in to refocus the organization exclusively on chamber music. Following the reorganization, all concerts were moved to the Sedona Performing Arts Center, which offered a larger seating capacity. In 2018, Nicholas Canellakis of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center was appointed as the artistic director. Under his leadership, CMS saw an increase in audience numbers and financial stability. The educational program was also expanded to include Concerts for Youth and performances in local nursing homes. As of the latest information available, Chamber Music Sedona has welcomed over 550 artists to the community and has significantly contributed to the enhancement of local schools' music education. CMS continues to be a cultural mainstay in Sedona, providing residents and visitors with high-quality classical music experiences. The organization is governed by a Board of Trustees, with Brynn Burkee Unger serving as the President. CMS also recognizes the contributions of its Directors Emeritus and Past Presidents, who have helped shape the organization over the years. Chamber Music Sedona's operations and events are supported by the City of Sedona, loyal patrons, and donations from the public. The organization also offers memberships and keeps its community informed through newsletters and special event announcements.
