Arizona Friends of Chamber Music (AFCM) is a non-profit organization based in Tucson, Arizona, dedicated to promoting classical and contemporary chamber music in Southern Arizona. Founded shortly after World War II, AFCM has a rich history that began with two young couples seeking respite from the heat in a chilled bookstore near the university. This casual gathering evolved into a formal presenting organization, initially named the Arizona Friends of Music, which focused primarily on chamber music. AFCM's mission is to present first-rate performances of both well-known and less frequently played chamber music at affordable ticket prices. The organization is known for bringing world-class musicians from around the globe to Tucson and for its commitment to musical excellence and accessibility. AFCM strives to develop and maintain a broad-based, sustainable audience through creative programming and outreach activities. Over the years, AFCM has become renowned for its series of concerts and events, including the Evening Series, Piano & Friends, the Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival, and the Summertime Evenings series. These programs showcase a diverse range of chamber music performances, featuring both established and emerging artists, and are held at various venues across Tucson, including the Leo Rich Theater at the Tucson Convention Center, Holsclaw Hall, Berger Performing Arts Theater, the historic Fox Theatre, and more casual settings like the Scottish Rite Cathedral. AFCM has a tradition of educational outreach, offering master classes led by visiting artists that are open to the public. The organization also provides student discounts and free tickets to members of local youth music organizations, making chamber music more accessible to younger audiences. The organization's history of presenting chamber music dates back to its early years, when it imported artists from the Evenings on the Roof series in Los Angeles. AFCM quickly established a reputation for quality by booking ensembles directly and has since featured a wide array of international ensembles and soloists, including early performances by now-renowned groups and artists. AFCM's commitment to the local community is further exemplified by its volunteer board of directors, who handle the majority of the organizational work, and a part-time box-office manager. The organization's dedication to chamber music is also reflected in its commissioning program, community outreach activities, and educational offerings. The Arizona Friends of Chamber Music continues to be a pillar of the Tucson music scene, ensuring that chamber music remains a vibrant and integral part of the cultural landscape in Southern Arizona.
