The Music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn

The music of one of the greatest artistic collaborations in American history comes to Daniels Pavilion when the Naples Philharmonic Jazz Orchestra honors Duke Ellington and composer/arranger Billy Strayhorn’s partnership of nearly 30 years. During this period, often considered Ellington’s most adventurous, Strayhorn is believed to have written around 40% of Ellington’s repertoire — including Take the A Train, Satin Doll, Lush Life, Something to Live For and many more. In this program, the jazz orchestra combines the energy of Ellington with the sophistication of Strayhorn to bring some of the duo’s most beloved big band compositions to life.

The Naples Philharmonic and Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra join forces under the baton of Associate Conductor Manuel López-Gómez to present one of the most spectacular performances of the season. The Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra presents a selection of classical music favorites in a captivating spring performance that will leave the audience in awe of their remarkable talent and passion. The final work by the beloved Italian composer, Puccini, is well known to modern audiences thanks to opera’s most famous aria, Nessun Dorma, which has been performed by everyone from Luciano Pavarotti to Aretha Franklin and Jackie Evanco. In this fantasy fable setting filled with exotic splendor, Prince Calaf falls in love at first sight with the Ice Princess Turandot. She requires all her suitors to answer three riddles correctly, and all who fail are beheaded. The grandest Gulfshore Opera production to date ends the 10th anniversary season with the Naples Philharmonic.

The U.K.’s favorite swing band flies across the pond to bring an evening of riveting music to Artis—Naples. Renowned for their energetic showmanship and endearingly vintage aesthetic, The Jive Aces were first discovered on Britain’s Got Talent. The band has since seen incredible success and is regularly sought out for performances around the U.K. and now throughout America — they have even performed for the late Queen Elizabeth. The program will feature classic swing music favorites, along with some original songs from the band’s recording repertoire. Uplifting and irresistibly joyful, The Jive Aces are sure to knock your socks off.

Get ready to rock with the greatest Huey Lewis and the News tribute band, Power of Love! This talented group of performers will light up Daniels Pavilion with the best of rock ‘n’ roll music. Head back to the ’80s as the band performs all the greatest hits by Huey Lewis and the News. True fans will remember  their hit single, The Power of Love, from the Back to the Future film soundtrack. Relive this moment and other hits including Doing It All For My Baby, If This Is It and Do You Believe in Love. Frontman Tommy C has performed around the world with rock legends and now devotes his time to the band—his talented performance will have you go Back in Time!

Performing with your friends is the greatest experience! Jodie will take the stage with several of her friends featuring music for various instruments, including violin, harp, flute, cello, clarinet and accordion! It’s a concert like no other showcasing each instrument in its solo capacity with piano. You will hear the intricacies and learn the inner workings of each instrument up close and personal!

The premier interpreters of Balanchine close out the Dance series with a performance of Balanchine’s tour de force Agon, featuring 12 dancers moving in pairs, trios and quartets. The program concludes with Alonzo King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream, a boisterous piece set to the rhythms of India and Africa.

An up-close concert with instrument demonstrations, this free performance is a great way for families to learn more about string instruments and music-making. For youth ages 3-9, this Magic Carpet concert features musicians from the Naples Philharmonic Youth Symphonia performing a 45-minute program while demonstrating their instruments and answering questions.
