==Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra== The '''Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra''' (IPO) is a prominent symphonic ensemble based in the greater Chicago region, celebrated for its dedication to presenting concerts of professional symphonic music. With a mission to support music education and broaden audience awareness of musical excellence, the IPO caters to the diverse communities of the area. As the organization marks its 45th anniversary, it continues to enchant audiences with a rich variety of music, ranging from Baroque and Classical masterpieces to modern favorites and world premieres. ===History=== The origins of the IPO trace back to 1954 when it was established as the Park Forest Orchestra, a community-level ensemble composed of volunteer musicians. In 1978, the orchestra transitioned into a professional chamber orchestra performing in Park Forest, and by 1982, it was renamed to reflect its broader regional mission. A significant milestone in the IPO's history was the appointment of Carmon DeLeone as Music Director in 1986, a role he held for 25 years. Under DeLeone's leadership, the orchestra expanded its Artists-in-the-Schools Education Program and introduced interactive Youth Concerts. During the 1990s, the IPO was in residence at the Center for the Performing Arts at Governors State University in University Park. In 2008, the orchestra found a new home at the Lincoln-Way North Performing Arts Center in Frankfort, offering a centralized location for its performances. In 2011, DeLeone became Conductor Laureate of the IPO, and the orchestra embarked on an international search for a new Music Director, resulting in the appointment of David Danzmayr, who served from 2012 to 2016. Danzmayr's tenure was marked by the inclusion of an American work in every program. In 2017, Stilian Kirov was appointed as Music Director, beginning with the 40th Anniversary Season. Kirov has since broadened the IPO's repertoire and established the Classical Evolve Composer-in-Residence Competition. ===Present=== Today, the IPO is known for its artistic excellence, having been named the Illinois Professional Orchestra of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras in 1992, 2010, and 2020. The 2022-23 season opened with a celebratory concert on October 15th and features seven concerts showcasing both principal IPO musicians and guest artists, including violinist Netanel Draiblate, Grammy Award winner Bill McMurray, cellists Oliver Herbert, Inbal Segev, and Sonia Mantell, and violist Matthew Lipman. Performances are held at the Ozinga Chapel on the campus of Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights. The IPO is also committed to addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the organization, as evidenced by its Statement of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). The orchestra is managed by a 22-member Board of Directors and senior staff who are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Chicago's Southland through a wide array of musical offerings.
