Teatro Biondo

Palermo, Italy

Teatro Biondo of Palermo is an association whose members are the Region of Sicily, the Municipality of Palermo, and the Andrea Biondo Foundation. For its production and hosting of prose, music, and dance performances, the Biondo uses the Sala Grande and the Sala Strehler (Ridotto del Teatro Biondo) on Via Roma. Teatro Biondo was built in October 1903, during a particularly splendor for the city, which was undergoing a formidable urban expansion. A favored destination for princes and rulers, Palermo underwent a significant transformation, renewed by an enlightened entrepreneurial bourgeoisie (led by the Florio family) and a class of intellectuals, including architect Ernesto Basile, one of the leading exponents of the Art Nouveau movement in Europe. Alongside the most prominent names, a thriving school of artists and craftsmen of great taste and professionalism also grew.
