Teatro Libero

Palermo, Italy

Teatro Libero Palermo founded in 1968 by Beno Mazzone, has been based in Vicolo Sant'Uffizio in Piazza Marina since 1973, where it transformed the former reception rooms of the former Hotel de France, later a courthouse and university cafeteria, into a "theatre laboratory" that has become an international benchmark for theatrical research. To make way for the renovation of the former Hotel de France, on March 9, 1999, it moved to the premises, reopened after centuries of abandonment, of the former loggia of the 16th-century church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, also in Piazza Marina, where it is currently based. Teatro Libero Palermo is recognized as a Center for Theatre Production (formerly a Permanent Innovation Center) by the Directorate General for Entertainment of the Ministry of Culture and is funded by the Sicilian Region's Department of Tourism, Sport, and Entertainment for its production activities. It also collaborates with leading international cultural institutions, such as the Institut Français, the Nuovi Mecenati Foundation, the British Council, the Instituto Cervantes, the Institut Ramon Llull, and the French Embassy.
