For over 25 years, the Miró Quartet has performed on the world’s most prestigious stages, showcasing their “collective intelligence [and] uncanny precision” (Musical America). Their program includes excerpts from master works by Samuel Barber and Florence Price, as well as a PCMS co-commission for soprano and quartet by the genre-defying, Brooklyn-based composer Tamar-kali. The new work spotlights Philadelphia’s own soprano Karen Slack, who brings “the right mix of grace and fire” (Schmopera) to this much-anticipated local premiere.

In 2025, we celebrate the 200th anniversary of one of the most exuberant and masterfully crafted works in the chamber music repertoire. Written when Mendelssohn was just 16, the Octet is a dazzling showcase of youthful energy, lyrical beauty, and intricate interplay, requiring eight musicians to blend with the precision of a single voice. With the Miró Quartet’s seasoned artistry and the Isidore Quartet’s fresh dynamism, this collaboration promises to bring out the Octet’s electrifying brilliance, from its soaring melodies to its breathtaking fugue. With warmth, virtuosity, and sheer joy, the Miró and Isidore artists will highlight why this work remains a cornerstone of the string ensemble repertoire.

The Miró Quartet is one of America’s most celebrated string quartets, having performed throughout the world on the most prestigious concert stages. Based in Austin, TX, and thriving on the area’s storied music scene, the Miró takes pride in finding new ways to communicate with audiences of all backgrounds while cultivating the longstanding tradition of chamber music. The Miró celebrates its 25 th anniversary this season, performing a wide range of repertoire that pays homage to the legacy of the string quartet and also looks to the future of chamber music and string quartet playing in the U.S. In honor of the 250 th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, the Quartet concludes its recording cycle of Beethoven’s complete string quartets, with a box set released on Pentatone and performs the composer’s complete string quartets at Chamber Music Northwest. The Miró continues its Archive Project, honoring the American string quartet tradition by recreating historic programs by the Flonzaley, Kneisel, and Kolisch Quartets, with performances at Carnegie’s Weill Hall and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, and in other cities. The Miró also premieres a new work, written for them, by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts at Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, Chamber Music Detroit, and Chamber Music Tulsa. Since 2003, the Miró has served as faculty string quartet-in-residence at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas, Austin. In 2005, the Quartet became the first ensemble ever to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Daniel Ching, a founding member of the Miró Quartet, began his violin studies at the age of 3 under tutelage of his father. At age 5, he entered the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory Division on a full twelve‐year scholarship, where he studied violin with Serban Rusu and Zaven Melikian, and chamber music with Susan Bates. At the age of 10, Daniel was first introduced to string quartets.A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Daniel studied violin with Kathleen Winkler, Roland and Almita Vamos, and conducting with Robert Spano and Peter Jaffe. He completed his Masters degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with former Cleveland Quartet violinist Donald Weilerstein. He also studied recording engineering and production with Thomas Knab of Telarc, and subsequently engineered the Miró Quartet’s first promotional disc. Daniel is on faculty at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches private violin students and coaches chamber music. He concurrently maintains an active international touring schedule as a member of the Miró Quartet.

Here On Earth features musical depictions of our planet earth, its evolution, and the lives of its inhabitants, expressed through music that spans centuries, from Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet to Darius Milhaud’s La Création du Monde (composed in 1923) and Clarice Assad’s A World Of Change, newly commissioned in 2023. The concert begins with Jake Heggie’s Earthrise, reflecting on the fragility of our tiny blue planet from the perspective of the iconic photograph taken from the surface of the moon during the 1968 Apollo 8 landing. Traveling through time and space, the program telescopes in to celebrate the beauties of the natural world, and explore our relationship to this changing earth that is our home.

One of America’s most celebrated and dedicated string quartets, the Miró Quartet has been labeled by The New Yorker as “furiously committed” and noted by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for its “exceptional tonal focus and interpretive intensity.” Founded in 1995, the Quartet has performed throughout the world on the most prestigious concert stages, earning accolades from critics and audiences alike. They have championed the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts for more than a decade, and in the 2019-20 season they premiered a new string quartet entitled Home, by the composer for the Miró’s 25th anniversary. In their 2021-22 season, the Miró premiered Microfictions written for them by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw with performances in Carnegie Hall, Houston, La Jolla and Hong Kong. The Miró is also partnering with soprano Karen Slack in a new program exploring the works of Florence Price and Margaret Bonds with concerts scheduled for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Shriver Hall, Music Toronto, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society, and Chamber Music Northwest.

For more than 25 years, the Miró Quartet has balanced a loyalty to the legacy of the string quartet and a devotion to the future of the form, regularly commissioning new works and collaborating with the finest artists of our time. For this special Wednesday evening event at The Conrad, the Miró partners with the sensational GRAMMY-winning composer and performer Caroline Shaw, presenting the West Coast première of Microfictions, a new work co-commissioned by La Jolla Music Society for SummerFest, as well as performing Mendelssohn’s energetic and dramatic String Quintet No. 2 with Shaw on viola.
