Abstract: The year 2024 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the release of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, 1964), which has since become a beloved classic in France and around the world.  Diverging in many respects from the aesthetics of the contemporary Nouvelle Vague, Umbrellas was a bold experiment by writer-director Jacques Demy and composer Michel Legrand that also departed markedly from traditional film musicals. Umbrellas was sung from beginning to end, without any spoken dialogue. The creators aimed for a “transposed realism” that also bore little resemblance to opera. Legrand's score, composed in close collaboration with Demy, was recorded before any filming began. The painterly costumes and sets were also coordinated with the music and screenplay. Umbrellas has been recognized as reflecting important cultural, political, and social issues of the France of its day, including modernization and commodification in the decades after World War II, the pervasive impact of Algerian War of 1954–1962, and changing family values during an early wave of feminism in France. More recently, Umbrellas has been interpreted within the framework of queer cinema. This talk will explore the genesis and unique qualities of Umbrellas, as well as some of these important contexts.

Abstract: This talk reveals how the concepts of virginity and race, introduced by Spanish authorities, complicated the musical lives of New Spanish nuns. Starting with reflections on the Magnificat antiphon O Sapientia, located in a Mexico City convent chant book, I investigate the phenomenon of the Virgin Mary’s characterization as sound—God’s voice—in nuns’ music and devotional books to demonstrate how male clergy controlled women religious through the vow of obedience in order to preserve the colonial patriarchy.

CCRMA Presents: Transitions 2024 – Night 1

Abstract: As a novel approach to performance analysis, I adopt Konstantin Stanislavski’s method of acting to explore the hermeneutics behind a recorded instrumental performance. Taking the 1930 recording by Sergei Rachmaninoff of the Scherzo from Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B♭ Minor, Op. 35 as a case study, I explore Rachmaninoff’s subject position to illuminate empirical performance data that risks over-reduction if used in isolation. Stanislavski’s approach entails an immersion in the dramatic characters’ worlds to understand and internalize their motivations, circumstances, and emotions while synergistically calling upon the actor’s own experiential history. I consider myself the “analyst-actor” and Rachmaninoff-cum-the-Scherzo-recording as the “character” I embody at the piano. In this role, I saturate myself with Rachmaninoff’s lived experiences, states of mind, life narratives, and pianism as felt corporeally. With signs of breathlessness emerging out of this process, I construct a hermeneutical reading that, on the one hand, finds in his performance traces of his exposure to and contraction of diphtheria and the Spanish Flu and, on the other hand, understands it as channeling his experience allegorically in sheltered exile.
