Celebration Theatre

Hollywood, CA, United States

About Celebration Theatre Celebration Theatre is a prominent cultural institution and one of the oldest LGBTQIA theatres in the United States. Founded in December 1982, the theatre is located in Los Angeles, California, and has been a beacon for the LGBTQIA community for over four decades. The nonprofit organization was established with the explicit purpose of creating a community theatre by, for, and about gay and lesbian individuals and their allies. Throughout its history, Celebration Theatre has been dedicated to producing innovative and thought-provoking theatrical works that entertain, inspire, and empower audiences. With a commitment to celebrating the LGBTQIA community, the theatre has become known for its focus on inclusion, visibility, and pride. Its productions often tackle relevant themes and stories that resonate with the queer community and its allies, fostering a sense of unity and understanding. The theatre's impact has been recognized through numerous accolades, including awards from GLAAD, NAACP, and various Los Angeles theatre organizations. These honors highlight the excellence of the artists involved with Celebration Theatre, including performers, writers, directors, designers, musicians, and producers. The theatre has also been a platform for many LGBTQIA luminaries, contributing to its reputation as a space for professional and emerging artists to express the diverse experiences of queer culture. In addition to its theatrical productions, Celebration Theatre is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). The organization follows the Los Angeles Anti-Racism Theatre Standards and is a member of the Queer Theatre Alliance, a national consortium of LGBTQIA theatre organizations. Through this alliance and its own initiatives, Celebration Theatre strives to build a more equitable and inclusive community, both within the theatre and in the Greater Los Angeles area. The theatre's governance includes a board of directors and executive staff who are dedicated to advancing its mission and values. In 2021, Celebration Theatre welcomed new artistic leadership, with Ann C. James appointed as Artistic Director and Brittney S. Wheeler as Associate Artistic Director. This marked a historic moment for the institution, as it was the first time the artistic team was led entirely by Black women. Together, they aim to continue the theatre's legacy of artistic excellence and create new opportunities for storytelling that reflects the diversity of the LGBTQIA community. Celebration Theatre acknowledges its presence on the unceded lands of the Tongva, Kizh, Chumash, and other Indigenous peoples. The organization recognizes the importance of this acknowledgment as a step towards addressing the impact of its activities on these communities and promoting healing and support for Indigenous peoples. As a nonprofit, Celebration Theatre relies on the support of donations, in addition to ticket sales, to sustain its operations and continue producing quality, award-winning theatre. The theatre is supported by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the City of West Hollywood, and the California Arts Council, among other contributors.
