Along with it is a connection to the Industrial Revolution of Beethoven’s time. Composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s message is that “Gifts from the past—especially odes—must be looked at with new and searching eyes.”

Although Puccini felt his creative powers were on the decline when he composed his last opera, he doesn’t appear to have run out of ideas. Thomas Søndergård, known for his skill in leading opera, now brings to the Twin Cities the high drama of Puccini’s Turandot, which features the emotionally-riveting aria “Nessun Dorma.” The cast is headlined by star soprano Christine Goerke in the title role.

Holst's The Planets

Robert Schumann composed his Spring Symphony during the wintertime, dreaming of warmer days to come and the signs of life that would soon abound in nature. This sounds like the kind of activity many of us in Minnesota would understand! Thomas Søndergård conducts this bright, joyful symphony and collaborates with Concertmaster Erin Keefe for a performance of Max Bruch’s elegant First Violin Concerto. The Minnesota Chorale will lend their voices to two works on this program, performing Johannes Brahms’ Schicksalslied and delivering the U.S. premiere of Eleanor Alberga’s Rise Up, O Sun!

It is the season for holiday traditions, especially those as magnificent and memorable as Handel’s Messiah. British conductor Christopher Warren-Green has achieved more than 50 years of world-class conducting engagements around the world. He and the Orchestra come together, joined by heavenly voices, for this glorious December gathering.

More than two decades have passed since English conductor Paul McCreesh stood onstage at Orchestra Hall, and his return comes with an oratorio that has not been performed by the Orchestra in just as long.
