Stockton Symphony

Stockton, CA, United States

The Stockton Symphony Association is a distinguished cultural institution with a storied history that dates back to the early 20th century. Founded in May 1926 by Manlio Silva, an Italian immigrant and pharmacist with a passion for music, the Stockton Symphony gave its inaugural performance during Music Week for the Stockton Musical Club. The first full season commenced in October of the same year at the California Theater on Main Street, with ticket prices set at 50 cents for adults and 10 cents for children to cover expenses.\n\nAs the third oldest continuously operating professional orchestra in California, the Stockton Symphony Association has a legacy surpassed only by the San Francisco Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Under the leadership of its founder, Manlio Silva, the orchestra flourished until his passing in 1958. Subsequent conductors, including Horace Brown, Fritz Berens, and Ralph Matesky, each led the orchestra for brief periods.\n\nA significant transformation occurred under the twenty-seven-year tenure of conductor Kyung-Soo Won, during which the Symphony evolved from a community ensemble into a fully professional orchestra. This transformation was recognized by the American Symphony Orchestra League, marking the Symphony's rise to metropolitan status.\n\nSince 1995, the Stockton Symphony has been under the baton of Maestro Peter Jaffe. His leadership has been marked by continual growth in artistic excellence, the introduction and development of vibrant educational programs, and national recognition through composer residencies and acclaimed world premieres.\n\nThe Stockton Symphony Association is also deeply committed to education, as evidenced by their \"Steppin’ Out\" series of educational concerts for young people. These concerts have been a part of the Symphony's offerings for over twenty-five years, providing fourth- and fifth-graders with highly educational and engaging programs. The \"Steppin’ Out\" series is known for its lively audience rapport, led by Maestro Peter Jaffe, and features informative tie-ins to common core standards across various subjects, including math, literature, social science, and the arts. The educational concerts are designed to explore musical concepts in an accessible manner, often including a mix of classical pieces, modern hits, and interactive elements.\n\nIn addition to its concert series and educational outreach, the Stockton Symphony Association offers a range of programs and opportunities for the community, including a Fellowship Training Program, orchestra auditions for musicians, and various ways for individuals to get involved through donations and volunteer work.\n\nThe Stockton Symphony Association remains a pillar of the cultural community in Stockton, with a commitment to providing exceptional musical experiences and educational opportunities to audiences and young people alike. Its rich history and ongoing dedication to the arts ensure that the Symphony will continue to be an integral part of Stockton's cultural landscape for years to come.
