Sight and sound converge in Pictures at an Exhibition as Modest Mussorgsky translates the canvases of his late friend Victor Hartmann into music. Now a twist: Bay Area artists Liz Hernández and Fernando Escartiz unveil newly commissioned artwork in response to each of Mussorgsky's musical pictures. Over more than seven prolific decades, Franco-American composer Betsy Jolas has developed her own distinctive style: lyrical and cerebral, tender and fierce. Her Latest receives its U.S. premiere in these concerts. Meanwhile Augustin Hadelich brings his eloquent artistry to Antonín Dvořák’s rousing and rhapsodic Violin Concerto.

The State of California and the Bay Area itself has a unique ecosystem all its own with not only famous living composers residing and working here but their students tend to stay in the area and become well known which has led to generations of California taught and residing fabulous composers. They often use subject matter and musical inspirations are taken from their lives here, including the environment and nature which leave enough of a mark on them that when they leave they still paint the picture of what it is like to live in this great state. The piece we are featuring on this program by composer Ben Shirley does exactly that.  Ben Shirley was a student of Gabriela Lena Frank at the GLF Creative Academy of Music in Boonville, CA and his work High Sierra Sonata evokes the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the perseverance of runners who participate in high altitude running.  Ben is also a participant in the GLF "Composing Earth" project dedicated to the study of climate change, was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and is a marathon runner featured in the film "Skid Row Marathon"

Concert two, Pfeiffer, translates to whistler, and is guest conducted by Andrew Grahms. The Pfeiffer family were settlers in the Big Sur region who loved the land so much that they eventually sold it to the State of California to turn into a State Park. The pieces in this program also show a connection to place and draw from philosophical and poetic ideals; Anne Clyne borrows from a Scottish fiddle tune and draws inspiration from her experiences in Edinburgh for her piece Pivot, Liszt draws from poems by Autran and Lamartine for Les Preludes, and Brahms utilizes the style hongrois (the "Hungarian style") in homage to his friend and collaborator, the Austro-Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim, in his violin concerto featuring violinist and Monterey Symphony concertmaster Christina Mok. Pfeiffer concert is a part of the inaugural California Festival: a celebration of new music, along with 50 other organizations such as the LA Phil and the San Francisco Symphony.

Artistic Director Daria Adams curates a one-hour program of four pieces by living composers, whose works look back in some way, then weaves them together with their historical counterparts. The third of 16 planned concerts and four events, Perilous Balance sees three young composers respond to Arnold Schoenberg’s groundbreaking Three Piano Pieces, Op. 11 with three brand new compositions. Also premiering is Peter Knell’s orchestral synthesis of ARKHIPOV, his gripping two-act opera depicting a Soviet submarine run amok. Among its musical arsenal, Arkhipov Synthesis uses a key technique invented by Schoenberg. Especially, we are honored to west-coast premiere the piece, Dedication (2022), by William Bolcom during our Stanford Philharmonia Fall Concert, conducted by Paul Phillips, as part of the CA Festival this year. Along with Bolcom, we have Mozart Symphony No.34 in C Major, K. 338 and Charles Griffes on our program, which Griffes’s piece, Poem for Flute and Orchestra, will be performed by Laura Futamura, a 2023 Concerto Competition Winner at Stanford University.

iSing Silicon Valley presents two iSing-commissioned works, from a performance at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph (San Jose, CA) in May 2023: the world premiere of Lenggang Kangkung (2023), composer Tracy Wong’s setting of a traditional folk song from the Malay Archipelago, and Latvian composer Santa Ratniece’s work, Where the Insects Cry (2022), for treble voices and four cellos based on texts from Japanese writers.

Celebrating Californians past and present Ray/Kallay explores the rich tapestry of composers who have called California home, with works by Michael Byron, John Luther Adams (with video by Johannes Bosgra), Joao Pedro Oliveira, Rand Steiger, Nina Shekhar, Sean Friar, Veronika Krausas and Karen Tanaka. Concert will be at 2220 Arts and Archives.
