Dance Theatre of Harlem

New York City, NY, United States

The Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) is a prestigious ballet company and school based in Harlem, New York, with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1969. Established by Arthur Mitchell, the first black principal dancer at New York City Ballet, and his former ballet master Karel Shook, the Dance Theatre of Harlem was born out of a vision to create a democratic space in the world of dance, particularly during the height of the civil rights movement. Arthur Mitchell, inspired by the ideals of empowerment and change following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., sought to make a difference in his community. He started by teaching ballet classes in a converted garage in Harlem, with an inclusive approach that welcomed dancers of all colors to train and excel in classical ballet. The company quickly became a pioneer, integrating stages and expanding the reach of ballet through extensive outreach programs both domestically and internationally. The early company was diverse, with members from various ethnic backgrounds, and it was not long before Dance Theatre of Harlem became a beacon for black dancers worldwide. Virginia Johnson, a founding member and later the artistic director of DTH, emphasized that the company's goal was to demonstrate that ballet belongs to everyone and can be performed by anyone, regardless of race. Dance Theatre of Harlem has a significant place in the history of ballet, challenging the exclusivity of the art form and breaking racial and political boundaries. The company's repertoire includes modern classics and innovative works that have been performed around the world, including in Russia and South Africa, where their performances and outreach programs have had a profound impact on local communities and international politics. The company has faced challenges, including a hiatus from 2004 to 2012 due to financial difficulties, but has continued to inspire new generations of dancers. Under the leadership of Virginia Johnson, and with the future direction of Robert Garland and Tai Jimenez, Dance Theatre of Harlem upholds values of access, opportunity, and excellence, maintaining its legacy as an elegant example of the transformative power of inclusive art. As of June 30, 2023, Virginia Johnson will retire as Artistic Director and will be succeeded by Robert Garland, with Tai Jimenez taking on the role of Director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem School. The organization continues to foster the development of young artists and engage with communities through performances, education, and community engagement, carrying forward its message of empowerment through the arts for all.
