Returning to Merkin Hall after their sold-out show last fall, the prizewinning cello quartet performs the world premiere of a cello quartet by Brazilian composer André Mehmari, plus world premieres of new arrangements of music by Niccolò Paganini, L.V. Beethoven and David Popper. With members from China, Brazil, South Korea and the U.S., Galvin Cello Quartet​ explores the limitless range of a cello ensemble by bringing together new works from diverse cultural backgrounds. They burst onto the scene after capturing the silver medal at the 2021 Fischoff Competition, followed shortly by winning the 2022 Victor Elmaleh Competition and joining the Concert Artists Guild roster.

A veritable United Nations of cellists, the Galvin Quartet combines musicians from China, Brazil, South Korea, and the United States. The four members met at Northwestern University—taking their name from its jewel-box recital hall—and quickly captured attention with the silver medal at the 2021 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the top prize of the 2022 Victor Elmaleh Competition.

Incorporating virtuosity and uniqueness through each musician’s artistic nuance, the ensemble features cellists Sihao He, Sydney Lee, Haddon Kay and Luiz Fernando Venturelli

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts

The winners of the 2021 Fischoff Competition and the 2022 Concert Artists Guild Competition showcase the versatility of the cello quartet with music of different periods and contrasting styles and characters. From Vivaldi to Piazolla, the first half of the program journeys through works written for chamber orchestras, operas and virtuosic showpieces, redesigned for the cello quartet. As a unique ensemble that does not have the standardized repertoire of string quartets, the ensemble presents a rare opportunity to create and commission new works by composers of varying backgrounds, in this case Zhou Tian. The Andean Walkabout by Gabriela Lena Frank is the crux of the second half. Leyendas, with its American, Chinese and South American influences, encompasses many of the backgrounds and ideals of the quartet’s members.

The Galvin Cello Quartet closes its unique residency with the Bravo! Vail premiere of Dimitri Cervo’s Dança Negra and works by Rossini, J.S. Bach, Forino, Bottermund-Starker, Mozart, and Popper.
