The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) is a preeminent and dynamic cultural institution in Central Indiana, renowned for its artistic excellence and innovative approaches to music education, performance, and collaboration. Founded in 1930, the ISO has established itself as one of the nation's leading orchestras, offering a rich array of musical programs both within the historic Hilbert Circle Theatre and beyond. The ISO's mission is to inspire, entertain, educate, and challenge audiences through innovative programs and symphonic music performed at the highest artistic level. It seeks to serve as a beacon of the universal language of the human experience, connecting people through the power of music. The orchestra's diverse programming includes the DeHaan Classical Series, Printing Partners Pops Series, Bank of America Film Series, Uncharted Series, Coffee Classical & Pops Series, AES Indiana Yuletide Celebration, and the Kroger Symphony on the Prairie outdoor concerts. These series showcase the orchestra's versatility and its dedication to engaging audiences with a variety of musical experiences. Committed to community engagement, the ISO's Learning Community reaches approximately 80,000 people annually through a spectrum of programs. The Teddy Bear Series introduces preschool and kindergarten students to the orchestra, while the Discovery Concerts give children in grades 3-6 the opportunity to hear a live orchestra. For adults, Classical Jam with the ISO offers the unique experience of playing alongside ISO musicians. The Words on Music program provides insights from musicians, conductors, and guest artists before each Classical concert. The ISO also fosters young talent through initiatives like Side-by-Side, where students share the stage with professional musicians, and the Michael Ben & Illene Komisarow Maurer Young Musicians Contest, which encourages young Indiana musicians to perform in a competitive setting. Another significant educational component is the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO), founded by Betty Perry in 1996 and integrated into the ISO in 2008. Under the direction of Krystle Ford, the MYO serves over 200 students and their families each year, helping them develop both musical and life skills. The ISO's vision statement emphasizes the importance of human connection through music, with a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The organization strives to reflect these values in its programming, people and culture, and community building efforts. By embracing a wide range of identities and backgrounds, the ISO aims to create a universal sense of belonging for all who engage with it. The ISO is led by a team of artistic leaders, including conductors and composers, and is brought to life by a talented group of musicians. The staff serves as the backbone and support system, ensuring the smooth operation and continued success of the orchestra. For those interested in experiencing the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra firsthand, upcoming tickets and events are available, inviting the public to join in the enriching experience that the ISO provides.
