The Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a cornerstone of the cultural landscape in Austin, Texas, and holds the distinction of being the city's oldest performing arts group. Established in 1911, the ASO has been dedicated to enriching the cultural quality of life for both adults and young people in Austin and the surrounding Central Texas region through its commitment to excellence in music performance and educational programming. With a rich history spanning over a century, the ASO has grown to offer a comprehensive season of musical events and educational initiatives. The orchestra's concert season is anchored by the Masterworks Series, which includes eight pairs of concerts held monthly from September through May. These performances take place at the Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts, a state-of-the-art venue that enhances the audience's experience with its modern facilities. In addition to the Masterworks Series, the ASO presents the Sarah & Ernest Butler Pops Series, consisting of four concerts that run from October through June, also hosted at the Long Center. The Pops Series showcases a diverse array of music, appealing to a broad audience with its engaging and entertaining repertoire. The ASO also places a strong emphasis on family-friendly programming and educational outreach. Notable events include the Halloween Children's Concert and the Sounds of the Season, which provide engaging musical experiences for audiences of all ages. The orchestra's James C. Armstrong Youth Education Programs are a testament to its investment in the future of music, featuring initiatives such as ASO Tuneful Tales, Young People's Concerts, and the High School Concert Tour, among other school programs designed to inspire and educate young musicians and enthusiasts. The administrative offices of the ASO were originally housed at Symphony Square at 11th and Red River, a complex that includes four historic Austin buildings, two of which are owned by the ASO and Waterloo Greenway. This location also serves as the home for the Women's Symphony League of Austin. As of January 2021, the ASO's temporary administration office is located at 1806 Rio Grande St., Austin, TX 78701, due to a relocation. The ASO is led by a dedicated Music Director/Conductor and boasts a talented roster of musicians. The organization is supported by a staff and board of directors who are committed to the orchestra's mission and the continuation of its storied legacy. Opportunities for community involvement with the ASO are plentiful, including careers, orchestra auditions, and a volunteer program, all of which allow individuals to contribute to and become part of the ASO's ongoing success. As the ASO looks to the future, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide outstanding musical experiences and educational opportunities, furthering its role as a vital contributor to Austin's cultural identity.
