Spoleto Festival USA

Charleston, SC, United States

==Spoleto Festival USA== Spoleto Festival USA is an annual performing arts festival that takes place in Charleston, South Carolina. Since its inception in 1977, the festival has been recognized as one of America's premier events for the arts, showcasing a diverse range of performances over 17 days and nights each spring. The festival was founded by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Christopher Keene, and others who envisioned an American counterpart to the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Charleston was chosen for its historic charm, similar to that of Spoleto, Italy, and its abundance of theaters, churches, and other performance spaces. The festival's mission, as articulated by Menotti, is to serve as a "unique and fertile ground for the young, and a dignified home for the masters." It is dedicated to presenting high-caliber artistic programs, nurturing young artists, and embracing all forms of performing arts with a passion for contemporary innovation. The festival provides opportunities for young performers to work with master artists, conductors, directors, designers, and performers. Notable artists who performed early in their careers at Spoleto Festival USA include Renée Fleming, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Each season, the festival employs over 500 individuals, including 80 musicians for the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra and 60 apprentices in arts administration and production. The orchestra, a prestigious ensemble for young professional musicians, serves as the in-residence orchestra for the festival, accompanying opera selections and symphonic concerts, as well as participating in choral, chamber, and contemporary performances. The festival has been instrumental in the cultural development of Charleston, contributing to the city's reputation as a top cultural destination. It has been involved in the renovation of several performance venues, including Festival Hall, Dock Street Theatre, College of Charleston Sottile Theatre, and the Charleston Gaillard Center. Spoleto Festival USA has produced and presented numerous world premieres and American premieres, as well as traditional works in innovative ways. Spoleto Festival USA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and its 47th season is scheduled to take place from May 26 to June 11, 2023. The festival continues to contribute to the arts community with its array of performances, including opera, theater, dance, and music ranging from symphonic and chamber to choral, jazz, and folk. With over 150 performances across more than 10 venues in a typical season, Spoleto Festival USA remains a significant event in the American arts calendar.
