The Belcea’s return to the Kimmel Center features a Philadelphia premiere by one of Europe’s most esteemed composers, Brett Dean; the last of the quintessential string quartets Mozart dedicated to Haydn (who, upon hearing it, immediately declared Mozart “the greatest composer I know, either personally or by reputation”); and the bittersweet potency of Beethoven’s final complete opus.

Their program includes Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19, the last in a series of six sophisticated quartets that he composed over three years (1782-85) and dedicated to Franz Joseph Haydn, universally recognized as the “father” of the string quartet. For cellist Antoine Lederlin, a string quartet is, above all, a human idea and imagination, before any musical idea. In the case of the Belcea Quartet, all three aspects have undoubtedly been successfully consolidated, having now spanned over 30 years together. In the Ordenssaal, the chamber music heart and home of the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival, the musicians present three complex masterpieces of quartet literature from Viennese Classical and Modern periods, a program that invites both concentrated listening and relaxed contemplation. Furthermore, Mozart's string quartet, known as the "Hoffmeister Quartet," as well as the late works of Benjamin Britten and Ludwig van Beethoven, evoke a wide range of emotions: Mozart's work from his Viennese years—like his "Figaro"—can instantly provoke laughter and tears at the same time. In his last completed instrumental work, Benjamin Britten dramatically and fatefully explores the dark sides of humanity, while Beethoven wrapped the suffering of his everyday life in C-sharp minor, sonorous but with noble restraint.

Two of today’s finest string quartets become even more than the sum of their parts in octets by Felix Mendelssohn and George Enescu. These monumental works—each, incredibly, written by the prodigious composers in their teens—are quintessential representations of the form, showcasing the sonic power and rich, multilayered possibilities of an octet configuration. The Belcea Quartet’s most recent concert at Carnegie Hall was praised as “masterful ... superior artistry ... full of style, feeling, and expressive depth” (New York Classical Review), while Quatuor Ébène was called “as gorgeous as any ensemble in recent memory ... immaculately articulated exuberance” (The Strad).

One of the leading string quartets of its generation, the London-based foursome opens its latest PCMS program with quartets by Beethoven and Bartók before concluding with Debussy’s sensual and singular String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10.

This program of essential string quartets opens with Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Minor, a key commonly associated with the maestro’s most vigorous works. The Belcea Quartet is renowned for its Beethoven performances, for “single-mindedly fathoming the emotional recesses of the composer’s psyche” (Gramophone). More of the ensemble’s core repertoire follows as they showcase what makes their Bartók interpretations “thrilling … bound for classic status” (London’s The Times). The program closes with Debussy’s sole string quartet, a forward-thinking journey of constant surprise and beauty, unencumbered by the expectations of its time.

200 years after its first performance, Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 130 with its original Grosse Fuge finale has lost none of its revolutionary force and power to shock. The Belcea Quartet prefaces the composer’s late masterwork with the first of his string quartets, itself a radical statement of musical democracy in which all four players serve as equals.
