Boulder Philharmonic

The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, commonly known as the Boulder Phil, is a distinguished American orchestra based in Boulder, Colorado. Established in 1957, the orchestra has developed a reputation for its dynamic performances that resonate with the community's values, creativity, and sense of place. Recognized both locally and nationally, the Boulder Phil has been honored as "Boulder's premier orchestra" by Boulder Weekly and lauded as "Boulder's superb local professional orchestra" by the Daily Camera. Under the artistic and visionary leadership of Music Director Michael Butterman, the Boulder Phil has experienced a period of significant growth and innovation. The orchestra's main concert series takes place at the historic Macky Auditorium on the University of Colorado campus, where they present a variety of productions that often incorporate dance, choral, and visual elements, as well as concerts that celebrate the local culture. This imaginative programming approach has led to a series of sold-out concerts and notable recognition, including participation in the inaugural SHIFT Festival at the Kennedy Center and a Futures Fund grant from the League of American Orchestras and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra's mission is to enhance the Boulder region's artistic and educational cultures through orchestral excellence, embracing diversity, and connecting people to music, music to ideas, and people to people. Its vision is rooted in empathy and the belief that music is a powerful medium for understanding and shared humanity. The organization aspires to diversity, equity, and inclusion, aiming to make orchestral music accessible and welcoming to all community members, regardless of background. The orchestra's commitment to these values is reflected in their programming choices, which include music from diverse composers and performers, and their educational and community engagement efforts. The Boulder Phil reaches an audience of over 30,000 annually through concerts, the Discovery Education Program, and various community engagement experiences across Colorado's Front Range. The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of top freelance musicians from the Front Range and beyond, and it continues to explore new ways to engage with audiences and remove barriers to access. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and all contributions to support its work are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
