In addition to the repertory pieces Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal) and Brandenburgs, the Paul Taylor Dance Company returns to ADF this season with a new piece, Somewhere in the Middle, by Amy Hall Garner which premiered in 2022. Somewhere in the Middle is an adrenaline-fueled dance highlighting the athleticism and beauty of the Taylor Company, all to music of Wynton Marsalis, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, and other Big Band favorites. Garner marries the Taylor movement DNA to the inherent qualities of the jazz idiom with dizzying effect, reflecting the power, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inherent multi-culturalism in American dance. The 1980 work Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rehearsal) shows a dance rehearsal and a Hollywood noir whodunit which ultimately merge in a clever reimagining of the Stravinsky/Nijinsky masterpiece. Brandenburgs (1988) is elegant and virtuosic. It is choreographic grandeur at its finest married flawlessly within the joyous atmosphere of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

A perennial PS21 favorite, Paul Taylor Dance Company captivates audiences with its athleticism, emotion, and daring. The company returns with three of the choreographer’s masterworks: Mercuric Tidings (1982), A Field of Grass (1993), and Piazzolla Caldera (1997).

Hudson River Park and The Joyce Theater present the Hudson River Dance Festival, assembling some of today’s most exciting dance companies for two spectacular free shows, Thursday, June 8 and Friday, June 9.

The showcase celebrates the vibrant voices and diverse styles our city has to offer. Set against the incomparable backdrop of a Hudson River sunset, this two-day festival brings world-class performances to HRPK’s Pier 63 lawn. This year, street dance and tap performances come to our stage, along with ballet and modern dance.

World-renowned artist Alex Katz first collaborated with Paul Taylor in 1960 and designed sets and costumes for sixteen works in all through 2014. The four amazing works on this program provided this incomparable American painter with a canvas as large as a stage. In Polaris, Taylor’s choreography is contained within Katz’s large metal cube until the dancers burst free, and two ensembles execute the exact same steps to different music and to drastically different effect. In the sprightly Diggity, Katz’s canines form an obstacle course the dancers skillfully negotiate. The riveting Scudorama, dotted with Katz’s scudding clouds, was Taylor’s response to the potential Armageddon of the early 1960s. Sunset poignantly shows the deep camaraderie among soldiers and the devastating sense of loss felt by those they leave behind.

Since 2014, the Paul Taylor Dance Company has commissioned thirteen choreographers to create dynamic and innovative works that bring a fresh and diverse dimension to the stage. Lauren Lovette is the first Resident Choreographer in the Taylor Company’s 68-year history. Her work, hailed by The New York Times as “passionate, lush, and full of imagination,” has been commissioned and performed by New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Vail International Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Nevada Ballet Theatre. She also produced and performed in an evening of her own choreography, Why It Matters. Her work possesses great craft, musicality and beauty, plus a rebellious aspect that calls to mind the dances of Paul Taylor.
