The famous Caprice No. 24 by the devilish violinist Paganini is considered one of the most difficult pieces for solo violin. Sergei Rachmaninov took the theme of the Caprice and composed devilishly difficult variations for piano and orchestra. It's a good thing that a pianistic devil of a guy, the young French pianist Alexandre Kantorov, is taking to the keys for this piece. For his suite "Scheherazade", Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was inspired by the fairy tales with which the wise Scheherazade appeases the vengeful Sultan in One Thousand and One Nights. The storyteller, played by the solo violin, is accompanied on her journey through the Arabian fairy tale world by Tugan Sokhiev at the conductor's desk and moderator Malte Arkona.

Within just a few years, the French pianist Alexandre Kantorow has developed into one of the most exciting artistic personalities of the younger generation. Since his debut with the Munich Philharmonic in November 2021, he has had a remarkable career; now he is returning with the virtuoso "Paganini Rhapsody" by Sergei Rachmaninov. Kantorow's technical skills are intimidating even for some of his colleagues. This makes him the ideal soloist for this work, the technical demands of which even made the piano virtuoso Rachmaninov's hands flutter before each performance. A magnificent polonaise opens the third act of Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" and, in passing, provides the musical surface portrait of the Russian aristocracy in the 19th century. In his suite "Scheherazade", Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wanders through the oriental fairy-tale world of "From a Thousand and One Nights". Masterfully orchestrated, it is not only a fantastic narrative cast in sound, but also a showpiece for the orchestra and its soloists.

Anton Bruckner's work reached its peak in the 8th Symphony - and what a peak it was! Bruckner worked on the composition for a good three years and at the end he had the longest symphony that music history had seen up to that point. At the same time, it was his last completed symphony. In it, Bruckner revealed his artistic maturity and ability to create monumental soundscapes. The composer himself described the mighty finale as "the most important movement of my life" and wrote the exclamation "Hallelujah!" beneath the notes in his autograph. When the main themes of all four movements pile up on top of each other at the end of the fourth movement, it is the end point of an 80-minute symphonic journey and one of the most exciting moments a composer has ever created. Tugan Sokhiev conducts the late-romantic masterpiece, which is one of the cornerstones of the Munich Philharmonic's repertoire.

Performance by the orchestra and chamber music ensemble of the Munich Philharmonic. In a spacious sound installation, in which the entire orchestra is positioned on both sides of the hall and performs works composed for this occasion, the audience moves freely between the musicians. The notes that are played are projected onto screens that stretch the entire length of the hall. The note projections move with the music, and so the audience finds itself, hearing and seeing, in the midst of the room-filling sound.

Anton Bruckner, known as the creator of enormous symphonic colossi, actually composed chamber music too! The 38-year-old wrote his C minor string quartet as a study project during his lessons with Otto Kitzler. It was only rediscovered in 1950 and premiered shortly afterwards. Bruckner, however, composed the string quintet between his work on the 5th and 6th symphonies after the Viennese conductor and violinist Joseph Hellmesberger had asked him to do so "repeatedly and urgently". The result was a pocket-sized symphony, as Bruckner managed to transfer his symphonic ideas to a small chamber ensemble. When Mozart settled in Vienna in 1781, he met a friend from his days in Salzburg: the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, for whom Mozart not only composed his horn quintet, but later also his four horn concertos. The doubling of the viola shifts the sound balance into the soft middle range and gives the horn quintet its sonorous sound.

Karina Canellakis celebrated her debut with the Munich Philharmonic in June 2020 — due to corona as a "ghost concert" in the old Gasteig. For her renewed visit to Munich, this time in the Isarphilharmonie, Ludwig van Beethoven is the focus. The "Egmont" Overture and Beethoven's "Fifth" both address combative and heroic ideals. Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto, which begins with the D-Es-CH motif, the composer's initials translated into musical language, is about a very personal struggle and inner conflict. Karina Canellakis, who began her career as a violinist, attaches particular importance to transparency and a sense of style. The Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández is at her side for a curious and energetic reading of these popular works of the repertoire, who is also making his debut with the Philharmonic.

Among the ten psalm settings by Charles Ives, the setting of Psalm 90 stands out as the highlight and, according to Ives' wife, was the only composition that completely satisfied him. Ives was a master at combining hymn-like elements with the modern sound effects of the choir and creating a fascinating sense of familiarity through the instrumentation with four church bells. Bruckner's F minor Mass follows, a masterpiece of symphonic choral music whose premiere was called off because the conductor considered the work "too long and unsingable." A hasty judgment that Bruckner himself was able to refute with a celebrated premiere under his direction. To mark the Bruckner year, this concert program with Thomas Hengelbrock at the podium can be heard not only in the Isarphilharmonie, but also in the St. Florian Monastery in Upper Austria. In Bruckner's long-standing place of work, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has been putting on benchmark Bruckner performances since the Celibidache era. Then as now, the Munich Philharmonic Choir takes on the demanding choral parts.

The Israeli composer Michael Seltenreich, whose latest orchestral work is presented in this concert, grew up in Tel Aviv. Like Lahav Shani, he benefited from an early age from the lively Israeli music scene, whose founding father is considered to be Paul Ben-Haim from Munich. Born as Paul Frankenburger, he left his hometown in 1933 and emigrated to Palestine with the hope of peaceful coexistence between different cultures, religions and ethnic groups. His 1st Symphony was written in the first year of the Second World War and, although the circumstances of the time left their mark on the work, conveys confidence and comfort. In his violin concerto »L'Arbre des songes«, Henri Dutilleux explores the inner interweavings of a dream world. »L'Arbre des songes« is dedicated to the violinist Isaac Stern, the former teacher of Renaud Capuçon. In this work, Dutilleux moves away from conventions, composes in part aleatorically and uses orchestral interludes to counteract the traditional multi-movement structure. The Korean composer Unsuk Chin also questions the way traditions are handled in an ironic and loving way with her short work »subito con forza«, referring to the juxtaposition of symbolic contrasts that is so typical for Beethoven.

The String Quartet in A major, Op. 2, is the work of 16-year-old Richard Strauss, who had studied his masters. Strauss' father was extremely careful to ensure that his highly gifted son only came into contact with works by composers he approved of. And so the early string quartet stands firmly in the tradition of the Viennese classics. Things were less serious in the "Harbni" social club, to which all Strauss family members belonged. "Harbni" means something like "never angry", which inspired Strauss to compose a humorous set of variations on the song "Das Dirndl is harb auf mi". Folk music researchers pricked up their ears and determined that the alleged folk song was probably written by Strauss himself. The early Strauss works are contrasted by two world premieres by Dijana Bošković. In both commissioned works, the Yugoslavian-born composer draws on the rich tradition of Balkan folk music and transforms it into new sound worlds.

Sergei Prokofiev's G minor concerto, the second of his five piano concertos, is classicistic yet experimental. Prokofiev combines the virtuoso, almost athletic gesture, which culminates in a triumphant solo cadenza, with a distinctive melodic component. The Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov represents both - brilliant virtuosity and profound melodic design. In the "Gogol Suite," Alfred Schnittke reveals his inexhaustible sense of musical wit. With the exception of the last movement, which is in darker colors, there is hardly a moment of real seriousness in the incidental music to Gogol's comedy "The Inspector General." Admired for his theatrical and gripping interpretations, the Russian conductor Maxim Emelyanychev is considered one of the most promising conductors of his generation - and a specialist in the works of Mozart. The "Haffner Symphony" was commissioned by the Salzburg merchant Siegmund Haffner for his ceremonial elevation to the nobility. Mozart created the work under great time pressure, which is not evident from the exuberant symphonic fireworks.

The question of the authenticity of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for wind instruments has been discussed for decades without any convincing result. This plays no role for either the audience or the four soloists from the ranks of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - either way, the Sinfonia concertante is a masterpiece of wind literature. With the tender, lyrical "Siegfried Idyll", Richard Wagner gave his young wife Cosima a personal birthday present. Opera lovers will recognize leitmotifs from Wagner's music drama "Siegfried". Nathalie Stutzmann also presents a rarity: "Lachrimae antiquae" comes from a collection of lamentations by the Renaissance composer John Dowland. Robert Schumann did not look back all the way to the Renaissance, but at least to the Baroque period when composing his 2nd Symphony. His intensive engagement with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach was reflected in the work.

For many years, Einojuhani Rautavaara was an inspiring and highly respected professor of composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. His students included the conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen and tonight's soloist, Olli Mustonen. Rautavaara's 3rd Piano Concerto conjures up an atmosphere of calm and dreaminess, while Salonen's "Insomnia" explores the dark thoughts that haunt us, especially at night. Tchaikovsky gave his 1st Symphony the title "Winter Dreams" and takes the audience into a picturesque winter landscape. The youth concert full of northern lights, dream images and musical magic will be hosted by Malte Arkona.

2. Jugendkonzert

Dima Slobodeniouk conducts a program that is entirely dedicated to Nordic dream images and winter landscapes: For large parts, Einojuhani Rautavaara's Piano Concerto No. 3 exudes peace and mysticism; one would almost think it was written at night in a snow-covered hut in front of a warming fire. The Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen, recently awarded for his recording of this work, returns to the Munich Philharmonic as soloist with this "gift of dreams." The dark, demonic side of the night, which can rob you of sleep, inspired Rautavaara's student Esa-Pekka Salonen to create his orchestral work "Insomnia," which uses a large orchestra and special sound magic to describe the nighttime discomfort until the saving sunrise. Tchaikovsky's 1st Symphony, on the other hand, is more conciliatory and calming: with this symphony, Tchaikovsky made an atmospheric declaration of love to the Russian winter with all its manifestations of horse-drawn sleighs, frost flowers and pale winter sunlight.

This year the music world is celebrating not only Bruckner's 200th birthday, but also the 200th birthday of Bedřich Smetana. In the tragic life of the Bohemian composer, the death of his four-year-old daughter was a devastating event. The G minor piano trio, which was written immediately after the family catastrophe, is the painful expression of a grieving father. Joseph Haydn wrote not only his famous last symphonies in London, but also important chamber music. He composed the light-footed C major piano trio for the London-based German pianist Therese Jansen, who was praised for her flawless technique. A sculptor friend of the composer said of Bohuslav Martinů's first piano trio, which has the subtitle "Cinq pièces brèves", that it sounded as if it had been "carved from marble" - a description that Martinů found "very fitting". South of Prague, high above the Vltava River, stands Vyšehrad, the fortress mountain that is the subject of numerous myths and legends. Josef Suk created a special homage to Vyšehrad with his Elegy op. 23. The solemn piece served as a prelude to a tableau vivant, a "living picture" in which actors in frozen poses depicted the sunset at Vyšehrad.

A Journey Through Bohemia

It is probably the best-known composition of Baroque music: the famous "Air" by Johann Sebastian Bach. As a slow movement, it is part of the Orchestral Suite No. 3, which Bach, like Suite No. 4, probably composed for the court music in Köthen. Bach evidently valued these compilations of festive overtures and dance movements so much that he traveled several times with copies of the suites in his luggage. Bach's only setting of the Latin Magnificat text originally dates from his first year as Thomaskantor. With this magnificent composition, Bach wanted to demonstrate his skills and impress the Leipzig audience - which he probably succeeded in doing. Vivaldi supposedly composed faster than his copyists could copy. One of his many Concerti con molti strumenti is the masterfully composed G minor Concerto RV 576. Julian Shevlin and Andrey Godik, two members of the Munich Philharmonic, take on the solo parts. This baroque program is directed by Andrea Marcon, a proven specialist in historical performance practice.

In 1989, shortly before New Year's Eve, the opening of the Iron Curtain was symbolically celebrated with Beethoven's 9th Symphony. In two concerts - once in the West Berlin Philharmonie, once in the Schauspielhaus on Gendarmenmarkt in East Berlin - Leonard Bernstein conducted Beethoven's musical appeal to humanity. The orchestra was made up of members from East and West Germany, reinforced by musicians from the USA, the former Soviet Union, France and Great Britain - the four powers that were present in the formerly divided Berlin. But that was not all the symbolism, because the extraordinary circumstances prompted Bernstein to make a small but significant change to the text: instead of "Joy, beautiful spark of the gods", he had the choir sing "Freedom, beautiful spark of the gods". This historic concert event was now 35 years ago - ringing in the New Year with Beethoven's 9th Symphony is a beloved tradition of the Munich Philharmonic. The British conductor Nicholas Collon makes his debut with the Munich Philharmonic with this concert series, supported in his usual way by the Philharmonic Choir and an excellent quartet of soloists.

With the opening program on the theme of "America", Santtu-Matias Rouvali shows the musical diversity of the continent. Jazz great Duke Ellington is an example of African-American composers. His orchestral triptych "Three Black Kings" is a musical tribute to three mythological and historical black personalities. As a contemporary composer, Julia Wolfe reflects historical and current events in her music. The German cellist Alban Gerhardt presents Wolfe's energetic cello concerto "Wind in My Hair" as a German premiere. Charles Ives is considered the central figure of new music in America and the first American symphonist to emancipate himself from the European musical tradition. In his Symphony No. 2, Ives quotes traditional American melodies and weaves them with references to European Romanticism to create a complex and expressive sound fabric.

The compositions "Christian Zeal and Activity" by John Adams and "Itaipú" by Philip Glass are dedicated to different spiritual traditions in America. In his work, written in 1973, John Adams quotes and arranges the English hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers", which, despite its military tone, was associated with the American civil rights movement. "Itaipú" by Philip Glass deals with the technical colonization of South America. With the construction of the "Itaipú" dam, the world's largest at the time and completed in 1984, which supplies Brazil and Paraguay with electricity, around 40,000 Guaraní indigenous people lost their homeland. Philip Glass composed this moving choral-symphonic work based on the Guaraní creation myth of a flood. The voices of the Guaraní are brought back to life by the Philharmonic Choir and report on the difficult relationship between man and nature. Embedded between these works of American minimalism is the new piano concerto by a crossover artist between different musical genres: Bryce Dressner. The universal US composer became famous on the electric guitar as a member of the indie rock band "The National". At the same time, his reputation as an orchestral composer developed. The German premiere of his new piano concerto will be presented by the well-known pianist Alice Sara Ott in Munich.

There was only one thing they both lacked: the right gender. Fanny, just as brilliant a child prodigy as Felix, bowed for a long time to the will of her younger brother, who was convinced of the then common cliché that women were only capable of composing small, lyrical pieces. However, they lacked the strength for the supreme disciplines such as the string quartet or the symphony. Fanny Hensel's only string quartet, published in the 20th century, is a romantic masterpiece that proves her brother wrong. Louise Farrenc achieved great renown in 19th century Paris as a pianist, composer, and even as a conductor and professor. After her death, she was forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 1980s as part of gender research. Farrenc's string quintet is an arrangement of her popular nonet, which achieved a high level of fame outside France. The occasion on which Farrenc created the string-only version and whether it was ever performed remains a mystery. In addition to these two European women, two contemporary American composers are also in focus: Gabriela Lena Frank, born in California, traces her own roots in her works, which are fed by Peruvian-Chinese-Lithuanian-Jewish influences. In her work "Leyendas," she mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk music traditions. Jessie Montgomery has become a strong voice in American music in the 21st century through her artistic use of improvisation, poetry, and social awareness in her music. One of her latest works will have its premiere in this program.

"The history of American composition at the beginning of the 20th century revolves around an absent center," states Alex Ross, music critic for the New Yorker, and even titles the corresponding chapter in his bestseller "The Rest is Noise" "The Invisibles." This refers to composers such as Charles Ives, Wallingford Riegger, Carl Ruggles and others who had to work hard to establish an identity as American composers. Barbara Hannigan has made it her mission to bring these "invisibles" back to light. After intensive research in the Library of Congress, she presents a program that is probably unique in its form. It shows American music between 1900 and 1945 as if through a magnifying glass: from radical simplicity to radical dissonance to the fusion of classical and popular music, which reached its peak on Broadway. A picture of musical diversity that must necessarily remain incomplete, but even in this form allows fascinating and surprising insights. Hannigan's particular focus is on the individual, edgy, rebellious voices that sought their own expression and broke new ground.

The Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is a bridge between the form-conscious style of classical music and the individual expressive world of romanticism. Flowing melodies and a refined form have made it one of the most popular works in the repertoire. The fact that Mendelssohn spent six years tirelessly working on it is not noticeable at any point in the music. The virtuoso solo part is in the best hands with Hilary Hahn, who is valued worldwide for her perfect technique and musicality. Peter Tchaikovsky struggled with his fate. His "Fifth" with the omnipresent "fate motif" is the musical blueprint of his inner soul drama. During the composition, he was often overcome by doubts, he questioned his work as a composer and was of the opinion until the end that his Symphony No. 5 was a failure. Audiences, orchestras and conductors like Lahav Shani are convinced of the opposite.

"Those who wrote a Ninth were too close to the afterlife," Arnold Schönberg prophesied, referring to the symphonic oeuvre of Beethoven, Bruckner and Mahler: "Anyone who wants to go beyond that must leave." Mahler's ninth and final symphony is a work of farewell - permeated by a multitude of emotions, by painful melancholy, profound ruptures, but also by ecstatic joy. In an interview, Thomas Hengelbrock said that Mahler's "Ninth" is music "that constantly confronts us with our own mortality. But because it is so truthful and taken from life and translated into great art, it fills us with vitality and new courage." For the Ninth Symphony is not a work of resignation or hopelessness. It is one of the few great symphonies that do not experience a final apotheosis or end catastrophically, as Mahler did in his "Sixth." The “Ninth” fades away quietly, as if a beloved visitor sneaks out the door unnoticed.

With its extreme contrasts, ranging from dramatic climaxes to tender, poetic moments, Franz Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto is a virtuoso and interpretative challenge for soloists. The French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, known for his brilliant playing and the emotional depth of his interpretations, takes on the solo part. The piano concerto is framed by Strauss twice. Josef Strauss composed his "Dynamiden Waltz" in 1865 for the Industrialists' Ball in the Redoutensaal of the Vienna Hofburg, venturing into compositional realms that are not usually touched upon by dance music. No wonder Richard Strauss plagiarized this waltz gem for his "Rosenkavalier". The famous waltz melody is of course not missing from the "Rosenkavalier Suite", which Philippe Jordan recomposed. The selected key musical passages of the opera allow the audience to experience the plot in a concentrated form and bring the famous arias of the Marschallin, Octavian and Baron von »Ochs« to life, even when there are no singers on stage.

The famous "Chorale St. Antonii" comes from Haydn's B-flat major Divertimento, which Brahms used as the theme for his "Haydn Variations". The chorale is probably a pilgrimage song that was sung on foot to a St. Anthony's chapel to bring the pilgrims to their destination - "d'un pas léger", with light steps. The wind quintet genre took off in Paris with the enthusiastically received compositions of Anton Reicha, which Franz Danzi emulated in his G minor wind quintet. If France is still considered a stronghold of woodwind sound today, this is also thanks to Paul Taffanel. The "Société des Instruments à Vent", which he founded in 1878, also inspired later composers such as Jacques Ibert to write works for wind quintet. French Baroque composers used the term "Tombeau" to describe funeral pieces for deceased colleagues. Ravel's "Tombeau de Couperin" is more of a musical nod to a bygone era and is much more light-hearted than the title suggests.

The ODEON Youth Symphony Orchestra has been the official patron orchestra of the Munich Philharmonic since 2010. For this youth concert, the "godchildren" play shoulder to shoulder with the professionals. The Munich Philharmonic's principal violist, Jano Lisboa, presents two romantic gems for viola and orchestra: the popular romance by Max Bruch and the romance for viola and piano by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which was only discovered after the composer's death and which Lisboa presents in an arrangement for viola and chamber orchestra. Anyone who travels has a story to tell - musically too! Antonín Dvořák incorporated influences from American music that he encountered during his stay in the US into his orchestral suite. To escape the cold English rainy weather, Edward Elgar spent the winter in Liguria in 1904. "In the South (Alassio)" was inspired by the Italian landscape, language and culture. Joel Sandelson, winner of the Salzburg Festival Conducting Competition, conducts this varied program, while Malte Arkona moderates with a mixture of humor and background knowledge.

3. Youth Concert

Did Sisyphus have dreams? And if so, what did he dream about? Perhaps of soft moss, which is good for resting on, said Jouni Kaipainen, but he certainly didn't dream of stones! With his narrative compositional style, the Finnish composer, who died in 2015, always managed to arouse the curiosity of his audience and captivate them with his musical imagination. Shostakovich's 1st Piano Concerto also exudes a playful approach. Shostakovich cleverly quotes Beethoven, Haydn and himself, cheerfully collages a wide variety of styles and lets a single trumpet appear in the accompanying string orchestra as a parodistic disruptive factor. The solo trumpeter of the Munich Philharmonic, Alexandre Baty, is the cheeky dialogue partner of the celebrated Turkish pianist Fazıl Say in this program. With Sibelius' majestic Second Symphony, which was associated with the Finnish struggle for independence immediately after its premiere, conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste takes the audience back to the Finnish forests — perhaps to a small mossy clearing that invites dreaming.

John Adams conducts John Adams! In addition to the major American focus of the concerts at the beginning of the year, this program is a "portrait in miniature" of the USA's most important contemporary composer. One of his most frequently performed works, the orchestral fanfare "Short Ride in a Fast Machine," simultaneously evokes the excitement and terror of a nighttime drive in a high-speed sports car. At the end, the fast-paced work leaves both the orchestra members and the audience breathless. Debussy wrote his "Cinq poèmes de Baudelaire" in 1889, when he had not yet demonized Wagner's influence as a poisonous sting in French music. With the orchestration of four of the five songs, Adams creates a musical panorama of the era around 1890. Christiane Karg's lyrical, warm soprano voice reinforces the romantic, dreamy atmosphere. Adams' "Harmonielehre" - the title refers to the music theory text of the same name by Arnold Schoenberg - combines minimalist elements with sonic opulence and became a modern classic after its premiere in 1985. Adams was inspired to write the last movement of the three-part work in a surreal dream that revolved around the medieval mystic Meister Eckhardt.

With the children's concert "Where to put the anger" for children aged 5 and over, we ask ourselves the following questions: Who hasn't wanted to hide under the covers in fear? Or danced wildly for joy? Ransacked the apartment in anger? Fanny feels the same way: When she hears strange noises in the dark, she gets very scared, she can be so happy and silly that she could burst; she always has time for a good portion of fun and surprise. But right now, Fanny is just angry, so much so that she wishes the anger to come to her in person. She rages, screams, freaks out - the things anger does. With orchestral works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioachino Rossini and Robert Schumann.

Where To Put The Anger

Antonín Dvořák hid a very personal message in his cello concerto: a quote from his song "Leave me alone in my dreams". It was the favourite song of his sister-in-law and former childhood sweetheart Josefina Kounicová. While Dvořák was working on his cello concerto in the USA, he learned of her death. For Kian Soltani, this concerto full of painful longing and deep sadness is a very special piece, and he is convinced that "this work will accompany me for the rest of my life!" The German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, combines Dvořák's cello concerto with a new work by the American composer Sarah Gibson and with the orchestral version of Johannes Brahms' first piano quartet arranged by Arnold Schönberg. Otto Klemperer commissioned the Viennese, who was living in exile in the USA, to perform it. What Schönberg made of the original by the late romantic composer he greatly admired is often referred to as Brahms' "fifth symphony". Klemperer even said: "You don't even want to listen to the original quartet anymore, the arrangement sounds so beautiful."

Béla Bartók wrote his Divertimento in August 1939, while he was already preparing to emigrate to the USA in view of the increasingly threatening political situation. In the otherwise friendly work, the circumstances of the time are reflected in the dark, towering sound clusters of the second movement. Only two years earlier, in November 1937, Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto had its premiere - 84 years after it was written and abused for propaganda purposes: As part of a pompous Nazi event, Schumann's concerto was launched as an "Aryan" replacement for the banned Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - a plan that fortunately failed. Freed from its unfortunate reception history, the Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang plays Schumann's Violin Concerto. Schumann's 1st Symphony had an easier time of it, and was well received by the audience at its premiere in Leipzig. It is Schumann's most cheerful symphony and seems to reflect spring and the awakening of nature. The Munich Philharmonic will be led through this contrasting program by the Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

The snare drum has its big appearance in this chamber concert program. Due to its resonant skin covered with wires, the snare drum is known in English as a snare drum and is a central percussion instrument in many musical genres, from marching music to jazz and rock music to classical music. With its bright sound, it creates clear accents in the orchestra and provides rhythmic definition in the percussion ensemble. Whether as a percussive addition in combination with clarinet, horn and violoncello, as a rhythmic motor in the percussion ensemble or as a soloist - the percussionists of the Munich Philharmonic demonstrate the diverse tonal nuances of the snare drum with this program compilation.

Small Drum, Very Big

Of all Mozart's piano concertos, Emanuel Ax particularly appreciates the majestic C major concerto KV 503: "This piece has a certain grandeur about it. It is simply so wonderful, so expansive, so big, and the slow movement is pure magic." KV 503 is the crowning conclusion of a series of twelve piano concertos that Mozart wrote between 1784 and 1786 for his performances in the "Clavierland" of Vienna. Dmitri Shostakovich composed his 8th Symphony in the summer of 1943, a few months after the bitter battle of Stalingrad, which marked the turning point in the war through unspeakable human suffering. Shostakovich himself described his 8th Symphony as a requiem, as music that speaks of individual suffering. Others saw it as a message about the fear-filled lives of artists and intellectuals under the Stalinist dictatorship. Despite the gloomy themes, moments of hope and humanity permeate the symphony. With this emotionally gripping symphony, Slovakian conductor Juraj Valčuha opens a series of concerts that the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra is dedicating to the 80th anniversary of the liberation.

Three works that were created in the shadow of the world wars: Maurice Ravel actually wanted to create a monument to French music with "Le Tombeau de Couperin", and it is accordingly designed to be lively and optimistic. Completed during the First World War, Ravel took the title "Tombeau" as an opportunity to dedicate each of the individual movements to a fallen soldier from his circle of friends. For the day of liberation, when the oppressive period of the occupation of France would end, Francis Poulenc wrote "Figure humaine" in 1943. The Munich Philharmonic Choir sings this hymn to "Liberté", an impressive masterpiece for 12-part choir a cappella. Frank Martin also composed "In terra pax" in 1944 for the long-awaited first day of peace after the end of the Second World War. Premiered on May 7, 1945, the oratorio addresses grief and fear as well as exuberant joy and relief. The French conductor Alain Altinoglu will be in charge of this program.

As a precursor to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, this concert program will feature exclusively works by Polish composers as a tribute to the history and culture of our eastern neighbor. Almost 150 years lie between the creation of Chopin's early concert pieces for piano and orchestra and the symphonic poem "Krzesany" by Wojciech Kilar. What all three works have in common is their reference to Polish folklore. At the end of the program under the direction of Krzysztof Urbański is one of the most moving works of contemporary music, which many concertgoers will unconsciously or consciously recognize. In the early 1990s, the middle movement of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's emotionally gripping 3rd Symphony became a favorite of radio stations and was also used frequently in films and series. The composition, entitled "Symphony of Lamentations", sets Polish texts about motherhood, love and loss to music, including a medieval Marian lament, an Upper Silesian folk song from the time of the Polish uprisings and, last but not least, a prayer written on the wall in the basement of the Gestapo headquarters in Zakopane in 1944 by an 18-year-old prisoner.

Hope and resistance in the midst of darkness. With this joint concert, members of the Munich Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra commemorate all artists who found refuge in their art in the threatening presence of oppression and persecution or who were not allowed to perform for ideological reasons. For example, the renowned pianist Ilse Fromm-Michaels, who performed with conductors such as Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Arthur Nikisch, was banned from performing because her husband was of Jewish descent. The National Socialists took a similar approach with the works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, which were removed from all concert programs. The Austrian composer Viktor Ullmann was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942. There he wrote his one-movement third string quartet, a work that is deeply moving in its desperate beauty. The G minor piano quintet by Dmitri Shostakovich was written in 1940 and reflects the oppressive atmosphere of that time. It is a broken music full of suppressed emotions that leads through the depths of human nature. An intense and captivating listening experience.

On The 80th Anniversary Of Liberation

Musicians from Israel and Munich share the podium, as members of the Munich Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra sit together on stage for this special concert on the eve of the celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the end of the war. The bridge between the two orchestras is Lahav Shani, who has been chief conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since 2020 and will take on the same role with the Munich Philharmonic from 2026. The program features two composers of Jewish descent. The racial madness of the National Socialists drove the German-born Tzvi Avni and his family from their home in Saarland. Along with many other composers who were of "non-Aryan" descent according to the National Socialist definition, the work of Gustav Mahler was also removed from all concert and radio programs during the Third Reich. Malte Arkona leads the concert evening with background knowledge of both works.

4. Youth Concert

On May 8, 2025, the Munich Philharmonic will not only look back on the day of liberation from National Socialist terror, the end of a horrific world war, but also the beginning of the history of reconciliation between Germany and Israel. To mark this occasion, the Munich orchestra is inviting members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to jointly create this concert program under the direction of Lahav Shani. Members of both orchestras will share the podiums and play a program that illustrates the fateful connection between Germany and Israel. "Prayer" is the haunting musical prayer of Tzvi Avni, who was born in Saarbrücken in 1927 and had to emigrate to Palestine with his parents at the age of eight. There he received his training from Paul Ben-Haim, who in turn was himself a student of Gustav Mahler's close confidant Bruno Walter. Like no other work in music history, Mahler's "Sixth" is an intense musical exploration of human suffering and emotional despair. Both works convey the need to value peace, respect and cooperation as prerequisites for a hopeful future.

Lithuania's vibrant musical life provides the classical world with outstanding artists - and above all female artists. Giedrė Šlekytė and Raminta Šerkšnytė not only share the same country of origin, whose eventful history and archaic nature are impressively reflected in Šerkšnytė's music, both are considered musical ambassadors of Lithuania in their respective fields and attract international attention. Inspired by the "rich and sweet soprano" of his wife Pauline, Richard Strauss developed a preference for the song, both in the intimate form with piano accompaniment and for the sonically enlarged orchestral song. Franz Schreker dispensed with such genre designations when he simply called his last two songs "Vom ewigen Leben". The two songs based on texts by Walt Whitman mark a high point in Schreker's rich vocal work with their ingenious interweaving of voice and accompaniment. The Israeli soprano Chen Reiss is not only an admired Strauss interpreter but also a committed pioneer in bringing Schreker's works back to the concert stage. Scotland, with its legendary landscape and history, was popular among the artists of the Romantic era. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy found inspiration in Scotland for his Symphony No. 3, in which "Scottish moods" can actually be heard, from fog, storm and rain to a clarinet that performs like a bagpipe.

A clever marketing coup: When London audiences were fighting over tickets for Joseph Haydn's concerts, a rival concert organizer hired Haydn's former student Ignaz Pleyel. Flanked by a newspaper campaign that conjured up a "bloody harmonic war" between teacher and student, the rival company's box office was also expected to ring. In this context, the Sinfonia concertante was created as a counterpart to a Sinfonia concertante by Pleyel, which was performed in London in February 1792. However, the composer competition never materialized. Pleyel and Haydn demonstratively cultivated their friendship and paid each other mutual respect. Despite Gustav Mahler's initial complaints that his "Fifth" was a "cursed work" because no one could understand it, it is now one of his most esteemed compositions. This is probably largely due to the moving "Adagietto", which became well known outside of the concert hall through its use in Luchino Visconti's film adaptation of Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice". The Munich Philharmonic is looking forward to welcoming its honorary conductor Zubin Mehta, who was awarded the Golden Medal of Honor of the City of Munich in January 2024.

The family musical by Felix Janosa, who is already known to a wide audience through the "Ritter-Rost" series, is returning to the stage of the Isarphilharmonie! The intrepid Senta takes young and old on an adventure full of shivers and smiles, into a world full of magic and music. When she discovers a dusty score in a box, Senta disturbs an ancient ghostly peace and, together with her more or less spooky friends, sets out to search for hidden melodies, mysterious sounds and a long-forgotten composer. "Senta and the Cursed Score" is a captivating musical story with many catchy tunes and a medley of well-known works of orchestral literature, played by around 80 musicians from the Munich Philharmonic.

For almost three minutes, the cinema audience looks at a black still image while the spherical soundscapes of György Ligeti's "Atmosphères" wander through the hall. Stanley Kubrick's cinematic masterpiece "2001: A Space Odyssey" begins with this introduction to the dissolution of time and space. Instead of using specially composed film music, Kubrick preferred to use magnificently composed concert music. With his violin concerto, Igor Stravinsky found an idiosyncratic, almost cheerful approach to the genre. With baroque and romantic stylistic borrowings, he plays with the audience's listening expectations, only to then ironically break through the familiar. Prokofiev's first violin concerto is interpreted by Leonidas Kavakos, one of the most accomplished violin virtuosos of our time, who is praised for his unique violin sound. The road to the creation of Brahms' first symphony was long and rocky, but the composition of his "Second" was quick and easy. Since its successful premiere in 1877, Brahms' "pastoral" Second Symphony has been considered his most popular symphonic work, conducted here by the future chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic, Lahav Shani.

While Richard Wagner was working on "Tristan and Isolde," he composed a song cycle based on the texts of his secret lover Mathilde Wesendonck. The final song, "Dreams," in particular, shows strong thematic and musical references to the second act of the opera, in which Tristan and Isolde reveal their mutual, boundless love. For the celebrated soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen, the opera's "great emotions" inspired her to want to become a singer. The best prerequisites for interpreting the feelings of Richard and Mathilde. Wagner's songs are contrasted with musical dream visions by French composers. In Claude Debussy's masterfully orchestrated "Prélude à ›L'Après-midi d'un Faune‹," the Faun's sensual thoughts float in the sultriness of a hot afternoon between reality and fantasy. The protagonist's unfulfilled desire for love in Hector Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique" even escalates into horrific delusions. Andris Nelsons, one of the most sought-after conductors in the world, leads the Munich Philharmonic on this journey through images of longing and dream worlds.

Once and never again: Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy each composed only one string quartet, and in the large chamber music oeuvre of Jean Françaix there is only one string trio. Remarkably, Debussy published his string quartet in 1894 as String Quartet No. 1 - so he was planning further works in this genre. Françaix's string trio is one of his earliest compositions and is still a favorite with audiences today. The Pasquier Trio alone, for whom Françaix wrote his string trio, played it in over 1,000 concerts. Despite the positive reception, no sister work followed. Ravel's string quartet is also a unique early work that he composed as a student at the Paris Conservatoire for the competition for the prestigious "Prix de Rome". Ravel's fifth and last attempt to win the Rome Prize ended in a scandal that cost the director of the conservatory his job. This, too, has only happened once in the history of the venerable Conservatoire.

There is no shortage of superlatives when it comes to Sergei Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto. It is considered one of the most challenging works for pianists, "the concerto with the most notes per second." But the piece is not a superficial parade of virtuosity, because Rachmaninoff succeeds in filling the bravura display with deep "sentiment." After his brilliant debut with the Munich Philharmonic, where Kyohei Sorita caused a stir with Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, he now returns to the Isarphilharmonie with its sister work. In his brilliantly orchestrated "The Planets," Gustav Holst takes a sonic journey through the cosmos. Each of the seven planets of our solar system is dedicated to a movement that illustrates the mythological properties of the celestial body very effectively. It was not only contemporary audiences who regretted that Gustav Holst did not produce a follow-up to this monumental piece. And so “The Planets” became a classic one-hit wonder — with the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Gimeno.

A concert for all young people under 30! As a child, Kyohei Sorita dreamed of playing with a large orchestra and being enveloped by sound. He has now fulfilled this dream many times over. In 2021, he was the discovery of the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where he played his way into the hearts of the audience. In 2023, he made a brilliant debut with the Munich Philharmonic with Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, and now he is returning to the Isarphilharmonie with the sister work. Completely detached from the earth: Gustav Holst penetrates the infinite expanses of space in his composition "The Planets". In each movement, he focuses on one of the planets of our solar system and illustrates the mythological properties of the celestial body with great orchestral effect. The Spanish conductor Gustav Gimeno leads the choir and orchestra of the Munich Philharmonic on this brilliant journey through the cosmos. University Concert & For All Under 30

Antonín Dvořák made himself immortal with his last symphony. Since its premiere, Dvořák's Symphony "From the New World" has been a real hit in classical music. The symphony even made it into space: in June 1969, Neil Armstrong took a recording of the work with him on the moon rocket. Even though Dvořák's "Ninth" has been appropriated as American national music, it actually represents a synthesis of the most diverse musical influences. In this sense, it is a veritable "melting pot" - and therefore once again quintessentially American. "The guy has more ideas than all of us," Johannes Brahms is said to have said of Dvořák. Brahms himself came up with wonderful musical ideas for the violin concerto he wrote for Joseph Joachim in 1878. With the American violinist Hilary Hahn, one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time, and the South American conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada at the podium, the Munich Philharmonic's focus on America comes to a close with this concert.
