Lubbock Symphony Orchestra

Lubbock, TX, United States

The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is a distinguished cultural institution that has been providing world-class music and transformative experiences in the South Plains region for over 75 years. Established in 1946, the LSO has a rich history of fostering classical music appreciation, creativity, and education through its symphonic performances and community outreach programs. The LSO began as a volunteer effort led by William A. Harrod, a former member of the Air Force Band who was stationed in Lubbock. Initially formed as a dance band for service members, Harrod was encouraged by local clergy to create a community orchestra. Despite initial challenges in recruiting trained string players, the orchestra gradually evolved into a full symphony, particularly with the pivotal contribution of violinist Virginia Kellogg. By 1967, thanks to growing success and community support, the LSO transitioned into a professional orchestra, attracting new musical talents and directors. Today, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra is renowned for its high-quality performances, featuring nationally-known guest conductors and soloists. The orchestra is led by Music Director and Conductor David Cho, a talented musician whose career began in childhood and has since included débuts at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Under Cho's leadership, the LSO has continued to thrive, engaging with the community through various educational initiatives and outreach efforts. The LSO's mission is to enrich the greater community it serves through quality symphonic performances and educational experiences. Its vision is to be an integral part of the cultural fabric of the South Plains Region, with a strong professional community-based orchestra that appeals to diverse audiences and maintains operational and financial stability. The LSO is governed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors, supported by a full-time administrative staff and professional musicians who not only perform in the symphony but also participate in community outreach and work with local schools. The organization also offers employment opportunities for musicians and various administrative roles, contributing to the local economy and cultural sector. The Lubbock Symphony Orchestra's dedication to music education is evident in its various programs, including collaborations with schools and the appointment of an Education Director. The LSO's commitment to accessibility and community engagement is further demonstrated by its efforts to provide educational experiences that cater to a wide range of audiences. In summary, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra stands as a beacon of musical excellence and cultural enrichment in the South Plains, with a storied history of community support and a bright future ahead. Its continued dedication to providing transformative musical experiences is a testament to the power of classical music to inspire and uplift communities.
