The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (ASO), officially known as the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Society, Inc., is a distinguished cultural institution dedicated to connecting, enriching, inspiring, and advancing the state of Arkansas through the power of music. Founded in 1966, the ASO has grown to become a vital part of Arkansas's musical landscape, performing more than 60 concerts each season. These performances include a variety of series such as the Masterworks and Pops Concerts, Chamber Series known as River Rhapsodies held at the Clinton Presidential Center, Intimate Neighborhood Concerts (ASO, I.N.C.), and a comprehensive schedule of statewide touring and educational performances in numerous venues. The ASO also collaborates with Ballet Arkansas and the Arkansas Repertory Theatre to further enrich the state's cultural offerings. The ASO is renowned for its educational programs, reaching over 40,000 children annually through initiatives like the E. Lee Ronnel Music Academy, the ASO String Academy, and the Arkansas Symphony Youth Ensembles, which consist of two full orchestras and a string-only ensemble. The orchestra's commitment to education is further demonstrated by its resident ensembles, including the Rockefeller and Quapaw String Quartets, the ASO Brass Quintet, the ASO Big Band, and various other educational outreach programs. Throughout its history, the ASO has hosted a number of distinguished guest artists, such as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Mignon Dunn, Marilyn Horne, Andre Watts, Maureen McGovern, Bernadette Peters, Maya Angelou, and Doc Severinsen, who have performed with the orchestra in Arkansas. The ASO is comprised of the state's most sought-after professional musicians and is heard by more than 165,000 Arkansans each year, earning high critical acclaim for its performances. The governance of the ASO is overseen by a Board of Directors, including an Executive Committee and various other directors, guild representatives, life members, honorary members, emeritus board members, and a Board of Advisors. The orchestra's leadership is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with dedicated committees and task forces to ensure these values are upheld within the organization. The ASO's commitment to the community is also reflected in its fundraising efforts. Donations to the ASO support the placement of instruments in the hands of children, make live symphonic music accessible to all Arkansans, and enable world-class musicians to reside and perform in the state. These contributions are crucial for the ASO's sustainable and thriving future. As of March 21, 2023, Geoffrey Robson serves as the Music Director of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, leading the ensemble into a new era of artistic excellence. The ASO continues to be a beacon of musical artistry and education in Arkansas, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience the transformative power of symphonic music.
