Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, established in 1959 by Gerald Covell and supported by key Cincinnati arts, business, and political leaders, has evolved into a nationally recognized theater. Initially housed in a park shelterhouse in Eden Park, it opened with Meyer Levin's "Compulsion" in 1960. The theater quickly outgrew its original space, leading to the construction of the Robert S. Marx Theatre in 1968, designed by Hugh Hardy. Known for its commitment to new works and as an artistic home for America's top actors, directors, and designers, the Playhouse has consistently contributed to the national stage with numerous premieres and productions moving to off-Broadway and beyond. It has received two Tony Awards: the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 2004 and Best Revival of a Musical in 2007 for "Company." Under the leadership of Blake Robison since 2012, the Playhouse continues to serve as Cincinnati's national theatre, offering a diverse range of productions, educational programs, and community engagement initiatives. In 2021, it broke ground on a new mainstage theatre complex, furthering its mission to bring diverse, engaging works of great artistry to the community and highlight Cincinnati's artistic excellence nationally.
