Two-time Grammy winner Alan Broadbent, born in Auckland, New Zealand, received a DownBeat magazine scholarship at the age of 19 to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1969, he was invited to join Woody Herman’s band as a pianist and arranger, a role he held for three years. Settling in Los Angeles in 1972, Broadbent began a fruitful musical relationship with the renowned singer Irene Kral, and his talents as a pianist were soon sought after in the studio scene, working with notable artists such as Nelson Riddle, David Rose, Barbara Streisand, and Johnny Mandel.
