Chapel Restoration

Cold Spring, NY, United States

The Chapel Restoration is a notable historic and cultural landmark located in the Hudson Valley, specifically in Cold Spring, New York. Established in 1833, this Greek Revival style structure, originally known as the Chapel of Our Lady, stands on the banks of the Hudson River, opposite West Point. It was built to serve the Irish immigrants who found employment at the nearby West Point Foundry, with land and funds donated by foundry owner Gouverneur Kemble. The chapel's design was the work of English immigrant Thomas Kelah Wharton, who was just 19 years old at the time. Throughout its history, The Chapel Restoration has experienced periods of both prominence and neglect. After being abandoned in 1906, it suffered from environmental wear and a devastating fire in 1927, leaving it in a state of ruin. It wasn't until 1971 that a diverse group of community members, including actress Helen Hayes, banded together to purchase the chapel from the Archdiocese and initiate its restoration. The restoration was overseen by architect Walter Knight Sturges and the chapel was rededicated as an ecumenical site in 1977. Today, The Chapel Restoration is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operates as a non-religious, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, with a mission to preserve the site, offer a place for contemplation, and enrich the cultural life of the community. It is a serene setting for significant occasions such as weddings, christenings, commitment ceremonies, renewal of vows, and memorials. The chapel also hosts a variety of cultural events, including the Sunday Music Series, Jazz at the Chapel, Sunset Reading Series, and other community-focused programs. In 1996, the chapel was further enhanced with the addition of a balcony based on the original design and the installation of a custom-built tracker action pipe organ by George Bozeman. It also houses an antique Steinway Grand Piano with historical ties to the Livingston family. The Chapel Restoration is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by an Advisory Board, consisting of individuals committed to the preservation and cultural significance of the landmark. Located at 45 Market Street in Cold Spring, New York, The Chapel Restoration continues to serve as a beacon of history, culture, and community within the Hudson Valley.
