The Nutcracker

Known for his clean act that delves into the simple but comical aspects of human behavior, both adult and child, Brian Regan the comedian almost never was. The fourth of eight children, he majored in accounting at Heidelberg College in Ohio. His football coach, of all people, recommended he try the theater, and an acting coach suggested he try standup comedy. In 1981, Regan began working as a short order cook and host at the Comic Strip in his homeland of South Florida. Soon he became the club's MC and spent two and a half years on its stage before hitting the road. Drawing on inspiration from , Regan spent the mid-'80s entertaining crowds across the U.S. before settling down in New York City in 1986 (where, he would later say, he lived in an apartment that was so small, he kept his goldfish in a shot glass). Two years later, he won the Miller Lite Funniest Person in New York award, good for 10,000 dollars.

He has also served long stints in world class ensembles Estrellas de Areito and Afro-Cuban Allstars. His past musical journey and history is brought into focus throughout the critically acclaimed 1999 documentary “Buena Vista Social Club” and the 2017 follow up “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios”.

Those songs were written by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the composers who remained at the heart of Squeeze since its inception in 1973. Such early New Wave hits as "Up the Junction," "Cool for Cats," "Another Nail in My Heart" and "Tempted" led critics to label Difford and Tilbrook the "next Lennon and McCartney," an assessment that wasn't proven to be hyperbole. The ensuing decades found Squeeze building a formidable body of work, a songbook that continues to expand with the release of the vigorous comeback albums Cradle to the Grave and The Knowledge, a pair of records Squeeze delivered in the late 2010s after a nearly twenty-year hiatus from the studio.

Whether Michael Mayo is performing with his band, as a guest or alone with a looper pedal, the LA native’s commanding and otherworldly vocalese is quickly gathering critical and commercial acclaim around the globe. Mayo attended the acclaimed Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, only the third vocalist to be accepted into the 20-year-old program, where he learned from the likes of Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Following this, his 2016 album "Take Me to the Alley" won him another Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album. His subsequent albums, including the heartfelt tribute "Nat King Cole & Me" and the original "ALL RISE," have continued to receive critical acclaim and Grammy nominations.

Considering Matthew Shepherd responds to and reflects upon the devastating events that led to Matthew Shepard's heartbreaking death. Through music, poetry, and singing this piece demonstrates that his life and legacy are more than his inhumane suffering and demise. Reflections on Matthews legacy are compassionately explored in this groundbreaking work. Giacomo Casanova is arguably the world’s most legendary womanizer, but he was also an intellect, a gambler, and a scofflaw – all the right character traits around which to design a lusty ballet, which is exactly what choreographer Kenneth Tindall has done. Tindall, a former principal dancer is a Freelance award winning Choreographer and Director specializing in Narrative Dance. His Casanova offers a larger-than-life ballet experience like none other thanks to opulent dance underscored by sexual tension generated by composer Kerry Muzzey’s attention-grabbing music. Guest Conductor Julian Pellicano returns to lead Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra as it performs live music for this production.

Immerse yourself in an unforgettable evening of jazz with the Tal Cohen Trio featuring Ignacio Berroa at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This highly anticipated event is set to take place from May 16th to May 18th, 2024, with performances scheduled at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. each night. Hosted in Judson's Live, the Dr. Phillips Center's newest and most intimate music room, attendees are promised a 90-minute experience that includes a 50-minute performance in an atmosphere inspired by the world’s legendary listening rooms.

Tal Cohen, a Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist known for his unique blend of Jewish melodies, traditional jazz harmony, and an impeccable rhythmic palette, leads the trio. Cohen's international acclaim includes a 4-star review from Downbeat Magazine for his album Gentle Giants and the prestigious Freedman Fellowship. His 2023 album, The Art of Duo, showcases his dynamic musical relationship with trumpeter John Daversa. Joining the trio is Ignacio Berroa, a drummer celebrated for his innovative blending of Afro-Cuban rhythms and American jazz, who has played alongside jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Corea.

The event promises not just a performance but an experience, with world-class cocktails and small plates available for purchase. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show and at 8:30 p.m. for the 9 p.m. show, allowing guests to enjoy food and beverage service before the performance begins. Narrated by Willaq, an Inca priest, it tells the story of Tusuy, The Spirit of Dance, and her eternal struggle with her evil rival Supay, who captures Waynu a loving dancer and leads him down the path of suffering. Join her as she and her army triumphantly rescue Waynu from Supay’s evil clutches.

Opera Orlando heads to Westeros as it closes its 2023-24 MainStage series with a Game of Thrones inspired take on Donizetti’s bel canto masterpiece Lucia di Lammermoor. A tale of love, jealousy, betrayal, and madness, Lady Lucia Ashton is torn between allegiance to her family and her love for Edgardo–sworn enemy to the Ashton household. A forced marriage leads to tragic ends for all involved in this gorgeous operatic treatment of Sir Walter Scott’s gothic romance The Bride of Lammermoor.

Mixed repertory is always a high point in the season because the artistic director has constructed a menu of shorter programs that offer a lot of something for everyone. The production begins with a world premiere delivered by Orlando Ballet’s own Rehearsal Director Heath Gill who has wowed audiences with his highly charged and imaginative creations “Confronting Genius” and “The Next Big Thing.” Gill’s ability to captivate audiences through an uncanny and clear ability to fuse the best of classical and contemporary dance has established him as one of the country’s most exciting young choreographers.
