Through a selection process that began in April, hundreds of applicants will be narrowed down to six finalists who will take the stage with the Oslo Philharmonic in August. Nicholas Carter will conduct, and the winner of the final will receive a prize of €50,000. Giuseppe Verdi wrote his monumental Requiem in memory of one of his great inspirations, the writer Alessandro Mazoni. Four soloists, an expanded Oslo Philharmonic Choir, and a large orchestra bring depth and drama on the same scale as Verdi’s famous operas when the Requiem is staged at the Oscarsborg Opera.

Hagen's ruins are Richard Strauss' and Gustav Mahler's music, and the starting point for the piece is Mahler's third symphony. As the artists of antiquity, they established frameworks for their art form that later composers must relate to.

The first movement, Immigration, describes the tension and excitement over a new life in a new country. In Factory, Wolfe mixes folk tunes with the sound of sewing machines. Protest uses the employees' own words from the demonstrations. Fire combines dramatic news reports with the desperate cries of the victims.

Alpesh Chauhan is the conductor at the Oslo Philharmonic’s folk festival at The Palace Square. The orchestra has a tradition of concerts outdoors, almost as long as the orchestra itself. They have performed at Holmenkollen, The City Hall Square, and Myraløkka more recently, before the first Palace Square concert in 2017. This is our sixth concert in front of the Royal Palace; you do not need a ticket. Welcome!

Experience two of classical music's biggest stars in a unique collaboration: Klaus Mäkelä and Daniel Lozakovich are the soloists on cello and violin in Johannes Brahms' Double Concerto. Klaus Mäkelä also conducts Brahms' Symphony No. 1.

Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Symphony No. 7 as a tribute to his hometown of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) while it was under siege in 1941. The symphony became a symbol of patriotism and fighting spirit in both East and West and made Shostakovich world famous.

Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss are giants in opera history. Tarmo Peltokoski conducts orchestral excerpts from Tannhäuser and The Knight of the Rose.

Richard Strauss (1864–1949) had one of music history's longest and most prolific careers. Marc Albrecht conducts a pure Strauss program that culminates in the gigantic An Alpine Symphony. Stefan Dohr is the soloist in Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 2.

We invite you to the album launch with a talk about the recording, tonight's repertoire, and a video about the journey to the completed album before the concert at 6:15 PM.

Øyvind Torvund (b. 1976) wrote Two symphonic poems for the Oslo Philharmonic, which premiered them with Vasily Petrenko in 2019. The first poem is called Morning in the forest− a scene where the forest wakes up to idyllic birdsong but is gradually taken over by traffic and noise. Torvund wants to create an organic soundscape in the music without using authentic sounds from nature. The second piece, A Trip into the Future, begins with a march and a whistled melody that illustrates that someone is going on a trip. On the way, the walkers meet robots and many more unknowns.
