Lars Petter Hagen (b. 1975) wrote Kunstnerens fortvilelse foran de antikke fragmenters storhet (The Artist's Despair Before the Grandeur of Ancient Ruins) for the Oslo Philharmonic, who premiered the piece in 2010. The title is taken from the famous drawing by Johann Heinrich Füssli in which an artist buries his face in his hands in front of Roman ruins - unattainably beautiful in all their transience. Hagen's ruins are Richard Strauss' and Gustav Mahler's music, and the starting point for the piece is Mahler's third symphony. As the artists of antiquity, they established frameworks for their art form that later composers must relate to.

Karol Szymanowski wrote the intense choral piece Stabat Mater in grief after losing his niece. Sergei Prokofiev wrote his magnificent Symphony No. 5 during the Second World War - marked by the ravages of war, but with hope for a better future.

Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881-1950) was the oldest student in class when he started conducting in St. Petersburg in 1906. Øyvind Torvund (b. 1976) wrote Two symphonic poems for the Oslo Philharmonic, which premiered them with Vasily Petrenko in 2019. The first poem is called Morning in the forest− a scene where the forest wakes up to idyllic birdsong but is gradually taken over by traffic and noise. Torvund wants to create an organic soundscape in the music without using authentic sounds from nature. The second piece, A Trip into the Future, begins with a march and a whistled melody that illustrates that someone is going on a trip. On the way, the walkers meet robots and many more unknowns.

In Bluebeard's castle, cruel secrets hide behind locked doors. Jennifer Johnston and Gerald Finley are soloists in Béla Bartók's opera. Klaus Mäkelä also conducts Franz Schubert's Der Tod und das Mädchen in Gustav Mahler's orchestral version.

Thomas Adès' music from the scandalous opera Powder Her Face opens a concert in which Alpesh Chauhan conducts two of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most popular works: Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini with Stephen Hough as the soloist and Symphony No. 2.

Simone Young conducts music by three composers at the peak of their creative power: Johann Sebastian Bach's Ricercar, arranged by Anton Webern, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto with soloist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Johannes Brahms' Symphony no. 3.

Johannes Brahms (1833−1897) created his Symphony No. 3 during an intense working holiday in the summer of 1883. The four movements have many connections, and Brahms' close friend Clara Schumann wrote to him that they appeared as one piece, "which one heartbeat, each one a jewel." About the third movement, she noted that "it appears like a pearl, but it is gray, surrounded by a tear of melancholy..." The symphony's introduction has features in common with the third symphony of her late husband and Brahms' mentor, Robert Schumann.

The Tempest is one of Williams Shakespeare's most distinctive plays and has inspired a long line of composers. Pyotr Tchaikovsky set about the task in 1873 after a suggestion from his mentor Vladimir Stasov - he also wrote music for Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet later. «Does it have to be a storm in The Tempest?» asked the composer Stasov in a letter – he was more concerned with the love story between Miranda and Ferdinand. The answer he got was yes, but Tchaikovsky's orchestral piece had room for both storm and love and for the quiet and angry ocean.

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) started violin lessons when he was 14 years old and was soon completely absorbed by the instrument. In the next decade, he dreamed of becoming a concert violinist, but eventually, he gave up and focused instead on composition. Sibelius' Violin Concerto became his unhappy declaration of love for the violin, and the first version was so technically difficult that the soloists did not master the challenges.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was one of the 19th century's most influential artists, regardless of the art form. The opera Tristan and Isolde builds on a tragic love story from the middle ages, and Wagner finished writing the opera in Lucerne in 1859. The Prelude to the opera created a watershed moment in music history with its unstable and unpredictable harmonies. It became a starting point for the development of music without traditional tonality.

In The Four Seasons, Antonio Vivaldi managed almost the impossible: to capture the uniqueness of the seasons so effectively that the music is just as popular 300 years later. Australian Christian Li is the violin soloist in all four violin concertos at this concert.

In 1909, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) traveled on his first US tour. He brought along a newly written piece—Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor. He was the soloist at the premiere in New York, not knowing that he would emigrate to the US nine years later after the Russian Revolution.

Sergei Rachmaninoff, Paul Hindemith and Maurice Ravel lived through dramatic upheavals in Europe. Francesco Piemontesi is the soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Joana Mallwitz conducts Ravel’s La Valse and Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler.
