In recognition of the centenary of American composer Ned Rorem, program will include Rorem String Quartet No. 3, commissioned by the Albuquerque June Music Festival for the Guarneri Quartet in 1990.

Ying Quartet

Double bassist and composer, Xavier Foley, joins the Ying Quartet for the world premiere of his new work. Foley, first prize winner of the 2014 Sphinx Competition and the Young Concert Artists Auditions 2016 has appeared as soloist with the Atlanta Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra. As a composer, he has studied with Edgar Meyer and Hal Robinson. The Philadelphia Inquirer described Foley as “A dazzling player who hears borders between styles as limitation best ignored. He’s a standout player.... but he’s also a right spark of a composer.”

Two sterling ensembles unite for a program centered on Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s Septet, the first major work written for piano trio and string quartet. Acclaimed for performances of “astonishing, refreshing exaltation and exhilaration” (Los Angeles Times), the Ying Quartet and the “eloquent, enthralling” Horszowski Trio (Boston Globe) combine brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music.
