Alabama Shakespeare Festival

Montgomery, AL, United States

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF), recognized as the State Theatre of Alabama, has a rich history of contributing to the cultural landscape of the South and the United States at large. Established in a high school auditorium in Anniston in 1972, ASF received its official designation in 1977 and subsequently moved to a $21.5 million performing arts complex in Montgomery in 1985, marking a significant milestone in its development. Over the years, ASF has distinguished itself as a leader in the performing arts, both within the state and beyond. The organization has been instrumental in broadening the cultural identity of the South, producing a diverse range of theatrical works, including classics, Shakespearean plays, contemporary dramas, musicals, theatre for young audiences, and innovative new pieces. Its commitment to artistic excellence has made it a highly valued arts leader and community resource in the region. In addition to its theatrical productions, ASF has a strong educational component, having provided education programs to over one million students annually. One of its notable initiatives is SchoolFest, a student-matinee program that offers high-quality theatrical experiences to nearly 35,000 students each year. This program underscores ASF's dedication to life-long learning and its belief in the power of theatre and arts education to foster personal and collective discovery. ASF's mission is to build community through engaging, entertaining, and inspiring theatrical performances and educational programs. The organization's vision is to maintain its reputation for artistic excellence, broaden its reach, and expand public participation and support. ASF's core values—heritage, excellence, community, accessibility, life-long learning, stewardship, and equity, diversity, and inclusion—serve as guiding principles for its programmatic and financial choices. The festival is also committed to anti-racism in its systems, practices, and theatre-making. ASF actively works to combat discriminatory treatments and biased practices based on race, ensuring equitable outcomes for all. This commitment is part of ASF's broader efforts to represent and advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in every facet of its operations—from the stage to the administration, board, and audiences. With a dedicated staff and board, ASF continues to be a beacon of cultural enrichment and community engagement, celebrating over 35 years in Montgomery and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the arts and social progress.
