This masterpiece, lost and unheard for almost two centuries, was composed during Haydn’s early years with the Esterházy family and is known for pushing the boundaries of the baroque form.

The ASMF SoundWalk, titled "A City Full of Stories," is a 25-minute immersive audio experience created in collaboration with individuals experiencing homelessness. This unique SoundWalk invites participants to explore the imagined stories of the buildings and pathways that surround St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. The experience encourages listeners to slow down, look around, and truly listen to the city’s hidden narratives.

**How to Participate:**
To experience the SoundWalk, visit the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields and pick up a leaflet. The SoundWalk is best enjoyed using a smartphone and headphones. If you are unable to physically do the walk, the tracks are also available for listening online.

**Special Notes:**
- The SoundWalk is free to experience at any time between 15 April and 15 October.
- The guided walks scheduled for 17 April have been postponed due to illness. Please check the event page for rescheduling updates.

Serenade to Music by Candlelight

ASMF Musicians join session leaders, Charly Jolly and Rihab Azar, for a day of workshops in partnership with KidsOut and Surbiton Refuge charities. KidsOut, in collaboration with Women’s Aid,  gives disadvantaged children and families positive experiences to support them becoming future members of our society and workforce.

There are two milestone quintets featured in this program by Mozart and Beethoven respectively, referencing one another both in their scoring and key signatures. After the premiere of his Quintet, Mozart wrote to his father saying ‘I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.’ With extensive sketches in existence for this piece, it was clearly a project Mozart had laboured over – surprising for a composer not usually known for rewriting material. Beethoven takes his lead from Mozart in his youthful Quintet, written in his twenties when he was exploring the sonic possibilities of instruments in a chamber setting. We’re also presented with two trios in this concert, one by the French neoclassical composer Jean Françaix and another lively offering by the German Romantic composer Reinecke.

The Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed in 1967, drawing its membership from the world-renowned chamber orchestra the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was itself founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. The ensemble was created in order to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra and led by violinist Tomo Keller,the Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations from wind trios to string octets. Its touring commitments are extensive and include regular tours of Europe and North America, whilst recording contracts with Philips Classics, Hyperion, and Chandos have led to the release of over thirty CDs.

Seong-jin Cho – Europe

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958 and is currently led by Music Director Joshua Bell. In 1967, the Academy Chamber Ensemble was formed to perform the larger scale chamber music repertoire with players who customarily worked together, instead of the usual string quartet with additional guests. Drawn from the principal players of the orchestra, the Chamber Ensemble’s touring commitments are extensive and include regular tours of Europe and North America, whilst recording contracts with Philips Classics, Hyperion, and Chandos have led to the release of over thirty CDs.

The Chamber Ensemble now performs in multiple configurations, including the Academy Wind Ensemble, which makes its US debut with pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips in the 2021-22 season, performing programs featuring the quintets of Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms, among other works.

The Academy’s wind ensemble, composed of principal players of the orchestra, is no different. Joined by Caroline Palmer, a pianist renowned worldwide for her outstanding solo and chamber performances, the ensemble will bring a program of beloved repertoire to the St. Francis Auditorium. Mediated by the group’s “impeccable sense of balance” (Seen and Heard International), the evening will explore the different shades and timbres of wind instruments alongside the richness and versatility of the piano.
