The Academy of St Martin in the Fields, founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958, is one of the world's leading chamber orchestras, known for its fresh and brilliant interpretations of classical music. The ensemble, initially formed from a group of prominent London musicians, gave its first performance at the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in November 1959. The orchestra quickly gained international acclaim through its live performances and extensive recordings, including the 1969 best-seller "Vivaldi’s Four Seasons" and the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film "Amadeus" in 1985. Today, under the artistic direction of virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, the Academy maintains its original spirit of a small, conductor-less ensemble, performing symphonic and chamber music globally. The Academy has expanded its celebrated recording catalogue and collaborates with top soloists and directors in prestigious venues worldwide.
