The Boston Artists Ensemble (BAE) is a distinguished chamber music organization that has been providing intimate and deeply moving musical experiences to audiences in the Boston area for over four decades. Founded in 1980 by Boston Symphony Orchestra cellist Jonathan Miller, the BAE has garnered a loyal following through its commitment to excellence in chamber music performance. With a mission to celebrate the magic of great chamber music, the BAE presents five concerts each season, featuring a blend of great masterpieces, lesser-known works, and contemporary pieces poised to become new classics. The ensemble is known for its performances of rare classic works, such as the American premiere of a Sonatina for Glass Harmonica and Strings by C.P.E. Bach. Moreover, the BAE has a strong dedication to contemporary music, regularly premiering new works by composers like Gabriela Lena Frank, Judith Weir, Scott Wheeler, Matthew Aucoin, Sonia Possetti, Nicholas Underhill, and Robert Livingston Aldridge. The ensemble's commitment to cultural engagement is evident through special projects aimed at attracting new and diverse audiences. One such project, supported by a Harvard Musical Association grant, was "South Of The Rio Grande," a bilingual concert at the Boston Public Library featuring music by South American composers. The BAE prides itself on the caliber of its performers, who are not only deeply devoted to the art of chamber music but also possess profound insight and the technical prowess necessary to convey its essence to listeners. The ensemble's roster includes many artists who are part of the internationally acclaimed Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as experienced chamber musicians who have performed with renowned ensembles and are winners of prestigious international competitions. Performances by the Boston Artists Ensemble take place in two intimate venues that foster a sense of community and dialogue among attendees and between the audience and musicians. These venues are the historic Hamilton Hall in Salem and St. Paul’s Church in Brookline, both known for their warmth, beauty, and the intimate atmosphere they provide. Additionally, the BAE ensures that there is ample parking available for concertgoers at both locations. The BAE also maintains a presence online through concert videos available on their YouTube channel, allowing a broader audience to experience their performances. As the BAE moves into its 2023-2024 season, it continues to uphold its tradition of musical excellence, community engagement, and fostering a love for chamber music among audiences both old and new.
