King Center for the Performing Arts

Melbourne, FL, United States

Founded in 1988, the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts has significantly influenced the cultural and artistic landscape of Brevard County and Central Florida. This multifaceted venue, located on the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College, was realized under the leadership of Dr. Maxwell C. King, the college's former president. The King Center, designed as a state-of-the-art, multi-use facility, cost $12.3 million to construct, with funding provided by the 1983 Florida State Legislature and subsequent allocations in 1985 and 1986. The facility encompasses a six-story, 100,000-square-foot area dedicated to presenting a diverse array of programming, including Broadway touring shows, classical artists, ballet, opera, country music, family-oriented events, and children’s theatre. It features the acoustically vibrant L3Harris Technologies Theatre, which seats 2,016, and a more intimate 300-seat Studio Theatre. The center also boasts a Crown Club lounge for members and a spacious rotunda for receptions and corporate functions. Renamed in 1989 to honor Dr. King's instrumental role in its establishment, the King Center continues its mission to enhance the quality of life in the region through cultural, educational, recreational, and community arts programs. Managed by ASM Global and operating as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, it stands as a testament to the community's commitment to the arts, serving as a cultural beacon for residents and visitors alike.
