Lincoln Center Theater (LCT) is a prominent American theater organization located in New York City, known for producing a wide range of plays and musicals. Celebrating its 35th year, LCT has been recognized as one of the country's pre-eminent theaters, with a commitment to making the arts accessible to a diverse audience. The organization was re-established in 1985 under the leadership of Chairman John V. Lindsay, Director Gregory Mosher, and Executive Producer Bernard Gersten. It has since been lauded by The New York Times as the pre-eminent theater in the country. Today, LCT is led by Chairman Eric M. Mindich and Producing Artistic Director André Bishop. The theater produces dozens of works annually, which are seen by millions of audience members at its various venues, including the Vivian Beaumont Theater, the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, and the Claire Tow Theater, as well as other locations. LCT's mission is guided by the mandate of Lincoln Center founder John D. Rockefeller 3rd, which emphasizes that the arts are for everyone, not just the privileged few. The organization follows the motto "Good Plays, Popular Prices," striving to keep admission prices affordable and the theater experience inclusive. LCT's innovative Membership program allows 30,000 participants to purchase tickets at reduced prices, ranging from $52 to $82 per ticket, for the best seats available. The theater is also dedicated to serving culturally under-served populations by distributing thousands of free tickets each year across New York City's five boroughs. It offers special performances for the hearing impaired and engages in various community outreach programs. These include the Directors Lab, a developmental symposium for new and emerging artists; Open Stages, an arts-in-education program in cooperation with New York City public schools; and the Lincoln Center Theater Review, a literary journal that is distributed free-of-charge to schools and libraries. In June 2012, LCT expanded with a new 2-story addition on the roof of the Vivian Beaumont Theater. This space includes the Claire Tow Theater, rehearsal rooms, office space, and a roof terrace. It serves as the permanent home of LCT3, an initiative devoted to producing the work of new playwrights, directors, and designers, with the aim of bringing a new generation of artists and audiences to LCT. Beyond its physical productions, LCT reaches a global audience through tours, telecasts, films, publications, recordings, and its website. The organization's production history boasts more than 160 New York, U.S., and world premieres, alongside noteworthy revivals, all of which are documented in the LCT Review and celebrated on the LCT Blog. As it commemorates its milestones, such as the 25th anniversary, LCT continues to foster a love for the performing arts and remains a bastion of theater, contributing significantly to the cultural landscape of New York City and beyond.
