Carpenter Performing Arts Center

Long Beach, CA, United States

The Carpenter Performing Arts Center, situated on the campus of California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), is a premier venue for artistic, educational, and cultural experiences. Established in 1994, the Center was named in honor of the acclaimed pop music duo the Carpenters—Richard and Karen Carpenter—who both attended CSULB. The facility boasts a 1,054-seat auditorium and a stage area inspired by the David H. Koch Theater, formerly known as the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. This design allows the Center to host a diverse range of productions, from large-scale concerts to intimate special events. The mission of the Richard & Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center is to engage the community through performances and activities that enrich lives, promote lifelong learning in the performing arts, and create a bridge between the university and the wider community. The Center is not only a hub for CSULB students and faculty but also serves resident companies, off-campus organizations, and schools through its educational outreach programs, licensed activities, and professional performances. Each season, the Carpenter Center curates a program featuring both emerging and established artists from around the globe, offering a vibrant mix of music, dance, comedy, speakers, and family events. These performances have solidified the Center's reputation as a destination for exceptional artistic experiences. Additionally, the Center is home to the Richard & Karen Carpenter Exhibit, a permanent display that showcases the awards and memorabilia of the Carpenters. This exhibit is accessible to all ticket holders during Carpenter Center events and can also be viewed by appointment. While the Carpenter family supports the Center philanthropically, they are not involved in its daily operations. For those interested in more information about Richard, Karen, or their recording careers, inquiries can be directed to The Carpenters Fan Club. The Carpenter Performing Arts Center continues to serve as a cultural landmark within the Long Beach community, honoring the legacy of its namesakes while fostering a love for the performing arts across generations.
