The Youngstown Playhouse is a historic community theatre located in Youngstown, Ohio. Established in the early 1920s, the theatre's origins can be traced back to a group of four women from Temple Rodef Sholom who started reading plays for their own enjoyment. This small gathering eventually evolved into the Youngstown Players, marking the beginning of what would become The Youngstown Playhouse. By 1924, the need for local entertainment in the Youngstown community became evident. Despite the occasional touring performances by contemporary stars such as Al Jolson, Walter Hampden, and the Barrymores, the residents craved a more participatory form of theatre—one where they could be both audience and performers. This desire led to the establishment of a community theatre that would welcome individuals from all walks of life to engage in the dramatic arts. On February 16, 1927, several drama organizations came together to officially form The Youngstown Players. The group's initial performances were held in a converted barn at 138 Lincoln Avenue, which also had an entrance on Arlington Street. The barn was transformed into a theatre space with the addition of 165 seats and a 25-foot stage, and the first productions were staged in 1928. The Playhouse on Arlington Street was created through the collective efforts of numerous Youngstown families and showcased the region's exceptional talent. The theatre was a melting pot of diversity, uniting people regardless of their socioeconomic status, profession, or background. The only criteria for participation were talent and the commitment to contribute to the art of theatre. Throughout its history, The Youngstown Playhouse has been a beacon of quality community theatre. As it approached its 100th season, the Playhouse continued to celebrate its rich legacy while looking forward to future productions and events. In addition to its theatrical offerings, the organization has also been involved in educational initiatives, including a youth theatre program, various classes and workshops, and the Joseph E. Scarvell Youth Theatre Endowment Fund, which supports the development of young talent. The Youngstown Playhouse is supported by individual giving, underwriting opportunities, fundraising events such as the Fore The Arts Golf Outing, and a dedicated group of donors, supporters, and volunteers. The theatre also holds auditions, inviting members of the community to become part of its productions. Located at PO Box 11108, 600 Playhouse Lane, Youngstown, OH 44511, with a satellite box office at the DeYor Performing Arts Center, The Youngstown Playhouse remains a cherished institution in the Youngstown community, continuing its mission to bring people together through the power of live theatre. The box office, which is sponsored for the 2022/2023 season, operates Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and can be reached at 330-788-8739. The Playhouse also maintains a presence on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, allowing for broader engagement with the community.
