CityMusic Cleveland is a professional chamber orchestra established in 2004, dedicated to making music accessible through free concerts and innovative programming across Northeast Ohio. The orchestra collaborates with communities to bring exceptional performances to both seasoned music lovers and newcomers. Showcasing top soloists such as violinists Gil Shaham and Jennifer Koh, CityMusic transitioned to a democratic leadership model in 2022, emphasizing collaboration without a conductor, though guest conductors are occasionally invited. The orchestra is committed to diversity, highlighting works by BIPOC composers and women, and addressing social issues through commissioned pieces and concert programming. Notable works include Margaret Brouwer's exploration of bullying and Dan Visconti's depiction of Cleveland refugees. CityMusic integrates other art forms, commissioning program artwork and collaborating with local dance and spoken word artists. The Clurie Bennis Children's Outreach Series enhances arts education in underserved Cleveland neighborhoods. CityMusic's mission focuses on eliminating barriers to arts access, enriching cultural offerings, and building audiences for musical and visual arts in the region.
