Founding members JULIA EICHTEN, CONOR HANICK, COLEMAN ITZKOFF, and DAVÓNE TINES join dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet (Samuel Akins, Guillaume Diop, Germain Louvet, and Awa Joannais), musicians from Wild Up (Richard Valitutto and Seth Parker Woods), pianist Adam Tendler, and performer Soa de Muse in a series of performances channeling Eastman’s singular voice and celebrating queer resistance.

The Comet / Poppea is a groundbreaking opera that intertwines two distinct narratives to explore themes of cultural transformation and double consciousness. This innovative production juxtaposes Claudio Monteverdi’s 1643 Italian opera *L’incoronazione di Poppea* with the world premiere of *The Comet*, based on W.E.B. Du Bois's 1924 science-fiction short story.

**Production and Partnerships:**
Developed over six years, The Comet / Poppea is a collaborative effort produced by Anthony Roth Costanzo and Cath Brittan, in partnership with The Industry, AMOC (American Modern Opera Company), and the Curtis Institute of Music. The Comet, composed by George Lewis with a libretto by Douglas Kearney, is commissioned by AMOC.

**Performance Details:**
The opera is presented on a turntable stage divided into two halves, allowing the worlds of ancient Rome and 1920s New York City to unfold simultaneously. This unique staging creates a visual and sonic spiral, inviting audiences to experience the interplay of these two narratives. As the performance progresses, elements from each story begin to intersect, highlighting the dialogue between the works and their contemporary relevance.

Join us as AMOC* artists traverse centuries and landscapes in two programs that bring audiences from the Summer sunset to theatrical night. The first, at 7:00pm, includes Cassandra Miller’s About Bach—a patient meditation on melody, memory, and the passage of time at the day’s end—and Andrew McIntosh’s Little Jimmy, which combines field recordings, piano, and percussion to reflect Southern California’s terrifyingly sublime expanse.

The piece, with a libretto by Peter Sellars and concept by AMOC* member Julia Bullock, will appear from December 11 to 21, 2023 at Opera Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska, Stanford Live in Stanford, California, and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut before returning to The Cathedral of St. John the Divine for a second year.

Moving from duet to quartet, this production breaks open Messiaen’s cycle, connects movement to music, and grapples with the intensity of love and loss.

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect series, AMOC* invites you to an evening of close listening and engagement with sound, silence, movement, and space. With performances of compositions by Michael Pisaro, Jennifer Walshe, Jürg Frey, Carolyn Chen, and more, artists will explore physical awareness, attention to each other, and the spontaneity of personal and collective responses. Listeners are encouraged to begin arriving when doors open at 7pm to engage with Pisaro’s “Space” and other pieces of music.

AMOC*’s first collaboration with Carolyn Chen, How to Fall Apart describes cosmic, natural, and human processes of disintegration, aging, and falling apart. This evening-length work for three dancers, one violinist, and one cellist integrates text, gesture, and music, building upon Chen’s long-standing compositional work “in which sensuality and abstraction find common ground” (LA Times). How to Fall Apart unfolds as various assemblages of sound, movement, and storytelling cohere, dissolve, and reform, telling personal and scientific stories about the climate crisis, cosmological history, the erosion of soil in Northern Chad, the aging body, The Billion Oyster Project in New York, and the operations of microbes.

This chamber music arrangement—specially written for AMOC*—was first performed at The Met Cloisters in 2018 in the beautiful San Martín at Fuentidueña chapel. The New York Times called it “intimate, affecting and quietly rich with activism.” The piece, which celebrates Latin American poets and the voices of women, returns for a one-night-only engagement this holiday season at a different New York City landmark.

The exhibition, which will continue until January 21, 2023, brings together works by Louise Bourgeois, Heidi Bucher, Sam Chermayeff, John Hejduk, Camille Henrot, James Hong, Ficus Interfaith, Anne Libby, Mathieu Matégot, Emma McCormick Goodhart, Pietro Melandri, Luke O’Halloran, Eli Ping, Steph Shiu, Sophie Stone, Kim Tschang-Yeul, and Luc Tuymans.
