'''Manhattan School of Music''' ('''MSM''') is a preeminent international music conservatory located at 130 Claremont Avenue in New York City. With a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1918, MSM has evolved from a small community music school to a top-tier conservatory, recognized globally for its excellence in music education. === History === The origins of the Manhattan School of Music can be traced to its founder, Janet Daniels Schenck, who began her mission by organizing young musicians to teach lessons to the immigrant population in East Harlem. The school, initially known as the Neighborhood Music School, quickly grew to accommodate 120 students with a faculty of 23. By 1938, it was renamed Manhattan School of Music. Throughout the decades, MSM has undergone significant growth and transformation. In 1943, it became an accredited college offering a Bachelor of Music degree, followed by a Master's degree in 1947. The school's reputation for excellence continued to flourish under the leadership of John Brownlee and subsequent presidents, who expanded the curriculum and facilities, including the move to the current Morningside Heights location previously occupied by the Juilliard School. The conservatory has consistently expanded its academic offerings, introducing a Doctor of Musical Arts program in 1974, a Jazz degree in 1984, and a Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance in 1991. Under the leadership of Marta Casals Istomin, the school saw the construction of new performance spaces and the first on-campus student housing. Today, under the presidency of Dr. James Gandre, MSM remains at the forefront of music education, having initiated the city's first conservatory-based degree program in Musical Theatre and undertaking significant renovations to its campus and main concert hall. === Campus and Programs === MSM's campus is located in the heart of New York City, featuring state-of-the-art facilities that cater to the needs of its diverse student body. The school offers a wide range of programs, including classical, jazz, and musical theatre training, and is known for its world-renowned artist-teacher faculty. The conservatory provides undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, as well as an Artist Diploma and a Professional Studies Certificate. Additionally, MSM hosts special programs such as Precollege education, MSM Summer for young musicians, and community partnerships, emphasizing its commitment to outreach and music education for all ages. === Mission and Cultural Inclusion === Manhattan School of Music is dedicated to empowering individuals to realize their potential through music. The MSM Cultural Inclusion Initiative exemplifies the school's commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusive practices within the institution. As MSM looks to the future, it continues to honor the legacy of its founder, Janet Daniels Schenck, by maintaining a steadfast commitment to excellence, leadership in music, and a significant role in the cultural community. === Notable Alumni and Faculty === MSM boasts an impressive list of alumni and faculty who have made significant contributions to the music world.
