The She

==The Shed== The Shed is a cultural institution located in Manhattan's West Side, dedicated to fostering innovation in the arts for the 21st century. It is an independent nonprofit organization that values invention, equity, and generosity, with a mission to produce and welcome innovative art and ideas across all forms of creativity. The Shed aims to build a shared understanding of our rapidly changing world and a more equitable society. Its highly adaptable building is designed to host a variety of events, including performances, exhibitions, and gatherings, with the goal of minimizing social and economic barriers to entry. ===Mission=== The Shed's mission is to act as a nexus for artists of various disciplines, ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. It seeks to create new work by bringing together established and emerging artists and to collaborate with cultural peers, community organizations, and like-minded partners. The institution is driven by the belief that access to new art and ideas is a right, not a privilege, and it presents engaging experiences that forge deep bonds between artists and audiences. ===History=== The history of The Shed dates back to 2005 when the administration of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg preserved a parcel of city-owned land on West 30th Street for future cultural use, as part of the redevelopment of the Far West Side of Manhattan. The concept for a new kind of cultural organization that would offer physical and programmatic flexibility was developed by Deputy Mayor Dan Doctoroff and Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Kate Levin. In 2008, the City issued a Request for Proposals for a unique and innovative cultural space, which was won by architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rockwell Group. The design for The Shed featured a stack of column-free exhibition and performance spaces with a telescoping outer shell, allowing for a dynamic and adaptable space. In 2013, Dan Doctoroff became the chairman and president of the nonprofit corporation responsible for constructing the building and creating the organization. The search for an artistic director led to the appointment of Alex Poots in 2014. The Shed was officially opened to the public on April 5, 2019, and was named The Bloomberg Building in recognition of Michael Bloomberg's transformative vision and leadership. Since its opening, The Shed has contributed to New York's cultural landscape by supporting a diverse range of artists and art forms, and by collaborating with various partners and community organizations. The Shed is located at The Bloomberg Building, 545 West 30th Street, New York, NY 10001.
