Last summer, Vox Luminis wowed Berkeley Festival audiences with their numinous, finely tuned sound and exquisite vocal blend. They return to our stage this season with a program showcasing the early Bach cantatas—perhaps not as well known as his later works, but no less worthy of Vox Luminis’ wealth of talent and scholarly approach to the music.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church

Directed by world-renowned guitarist and lutenist Richard Savino, El Mundo takes us on a treasure hunt through the archives of the Cathedral of Guatemala City, where classical 16th-century polyphony blended with secular indigenous dances to create a unique Hispanic style that still exists today. The archives contain numerous works by some of the most celebrated Latin American and Spanish composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, among them Juan Iribarren, Sebastián Durón, and Jose de Torres of Spain, as well as native-born Guatemalan composers Manuel José Quiroz and his nephew, Rafael Antonio Castellanos.

Our 47th season kicks off with Ensemble Mirable, who offer us a treasure trove of underappreciated Baroque favorites. Pieces composed by somewhat familiar names such as Dieterich Buxtehude and Arcangelo Corelli are combined with those by Biagio Marini, Jean Zewalt Triemer, Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Dietrich Becker, Andrea Falconieri, and many, many more to create a fascinating mosaic of Baroque masterworks.

Rachel Barton Pine (violin) & Jory Vinikour (harpsichord), two superstars of the early music world, bring their collective talents to bear on some of Bach's greatest instrumental works. Enjoy sonic treats such as the Sonata in B Major for violin and harpsichord and the French Overture in B Minor—with the skill and panache that only Rachel and Jory could bring to them!

Trip the light fantastic with Ciaramella, in a program exploring dance music from the courts of Savoy and Burgundy to the streets of Bergamo! Featuring polyphonic arrangements of stately dances from the priceless basse danse manuscript of Marguerite of Austria, copied in silver and gold on black parchment, to virtuosic variations on ground basses like the bergamasca, romanesca, and ciaccona, you'll enjoy music meant to get your toes tapping!



Ciaramella

La Morra's recordings on the Ramée record label have become icons for lovers of late Medieval and Renaissance music. In this special one-night-only event, the Switzerland-based sensations bring us a program full of the gorgeous harmonies of the Italian Renaissance, including pieces by Francesco Canova da Milano, Don Michele Pesenti, and even a piece by Giovanni de’ Medici—or, as he was better known, Pope Leo X!

Special Event: La Morra

Recline on your chaise longue and enjoy luscious musical bonbons as a member of the French bourgeoisie would! This program, by local favorites Musica Pacifica (joined by divine soprano Sherezade Panthaki), brings you a full feast of music such as would have been enjoyed in a typical Parisian salon of the time: colorful suites and sonatas by Jean-Philippe Rameau and Jean-Marie Leclair, one of Georg Philipp Telemann’s beloved “Paris” quartets, and gorgeous vocal music from Antonio Vivaldi, Georg Frideric Handel, and Louis-Nicolas Clérambault.
