Opera Colorado

Englewood, CO, United States

About Opera Colorado Opera Colorado is a premier opera company based in Denver, Colorado, that has been a vital part of the city's cultural scene since its inception in 1981. The company is dedicated to presenting world-class opera performances and has a strong commitment to education and community engagement. History The origins of Opera Colorado date back to 1980 when a group of opera enthusiasts convened at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion to discuss the establishment of a major opera company in Denver. Their vision came to fruition with the help of Nathaniel Merrill and Louise Sherman, both experienced professionals from the Metropolitan Opera. Opera Colorado's inaugural season opened on April 4, 1983, with a production of Verdi's "Otello," featuring the acclaimed tenor James McCracken. The season also included a performance of Puccini's "La Bohème" with the legendary tenor Plácido Domingo. For its first decade, Opera Colorado presented two mainstage productions each season at Boettcher Concert Hall. In 1992, the company expanded its offerings to include a third mainstage production at the Temple Buell Theatre. Nathaniel Merrill's departure in 1998 marked a new era for the company, with Stephen Seifert taking over as president and general director and appointing James Robinson as artistic director. Peter Russell succeeded Seifert in 1999, leading the company to participate in the renovation of the 1908 Auditorium Theater, which resulted in the creation of the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The new venue opened in 2005 with a gala concert featuring renowned artists such as Renée Fleming. In 2007, Greg Carpenter was appointed General & Artistic Director, a role that was later named the Ellie Caulkins General & Artistic Director in his honor. Music Director Ari Pelto joined the company in 2015, contributing significantly to its artistic vision and programming. Opera Colorado has continued to innovate and expand its reach, including the launch of its Scene Change initiative in 2016-17 and the production of its first world premiere opera, Lori Laitman's "The Scarlet Letter." The company has also embraced digital programming, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has established the Opera Colorado Opera Center in Englewood as its administrative and rehearsal hub. Mission, Vision, and Values Opera Colorado's mission is to celebrate and preserve the tradition of opera, inspire audiences, and contribute to the cultural richness of the community. The company values artistic excellence, innovation, and the power of opera to transform lives. Board of Directors The Board of Directors at Opera Colorado is committed to ensuring the company's success and growth, making it an integral part of Denver's cultural landscape and extending its impact throughout the state and region. Opera Colorado Amplified Opera Colorado Amplified is an initiative that aims to expand the company's reach and raise the voices within the community, furthering its mission and vision. Education & Community Engagement Opera Colorado's education and community programs reach over 45,000 students and adults annually, with offerings such as the Artist in Residence Program, Opera on Tour, and various workshops and guidebooks designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of opera. As Opera Colorado looks to the future, it continues to honor the legacy of its founders by presenting both traditional and innovative productions, engaging with renowned artists and emerging talents, and sharing the art of opera through live performances and educational programs.
