This year, the Tapiola Sinfonietta Spring Chamber Music Festival will be held in Dipoli, Otaniemi. In three different concerts, listeners will be treated to a diverse and out-of-the-box musical experience. This year, the festival program has been designed by Tapiola Sinfonietta horn player Ilkka Hongisto and violinist Kanerva Mannermaa. The theme of the program is beauty, and each concert embodies the theme in its own way.

A major highlight in each of Carnegie Hall’s past three seasons has been the Danish String Quartet’s Doppelgänger project, in which the ensemble pairs a Schubert string-quartet masterpiece with a new work inspired by it. The quartet’s most recent performance was described by The New York Times as “ensemble music at its finest.” The Danish String Quartet now concludes the four-year series by pairing Schubert’s towering String Quartet in G Major with a New York premiere by Bent Sørensen. The sensational Danish String Quartet returns to perform the third concert in its ongoing Doppelgänger Project, pairing Schubert’s Rosamunde Quartet with a newly commissioned work by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Schubert’s serene and solemn quartet bears the weight of the composer’s declining health and heavy heart during the period of its composition—when he died a few years after its premiere, Rosamunde was his only quartet to have been performed publicly in its entirety; it was also his only chamber work published in his lifetime. Thorvaldsdottir is widely admired as one of the most original voices of her generation, praised for creating vast, visceral, and ravishing musical landscapes that conjure at once a sense of “immensity and intimacy” (Gramophone).

For their third UMS appearance, they bring their Doppelgänger project, an ambitious four-year international commissioning project in which four composers create new works in response to a masterwork by Franz Schubert. In this program, they pair Schubert’s famous “Death and the Maiden” quartet with Pige (Danish for “girl”) — a new work by Finnish composer Lotta Wennäkoski, who has been praised for her mastery of color and musical textures.

The dazzlingly gifted Danish String Quartet returns for its second Berkeley concert this season, pairing a Schubert string quartet with a newly commissioned work as part of it Doppelgänger project, a four-season initiative co-commissioned by Cal Performances. The Boston Globe touched on how special they are in a review that described “a concert that was as comprehensively rewarding as any chamber-music performance in recent memory… Do not lose track of this group: Even by today’s high standards, it offers something very special.” That’s the truth; in a musical landscape with more high-level talent than most people have time to absorb, it’s worth taking note when groups are routinely described as in a league of their own. This is one of those groups.  In their return to Boston, the Danish String Quartet will present a uniquely curated suite of dances—filling the standard movements such as allemande, courante, and sarabande with works by composers ranging from from Marc-Antoine Charpentier to John Adams; and, finally, Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in G Major, D.887, called his “last and greatest work” (Gramophone).

The first half of the program features folksongs and new music by American and Nordic women composers.
